Furnace Kicks On - TV Sound Cuts Out

We're on a 6-week trip to the Pacific Northwest. We have encountered a new dilemma--when our furnace kicks on while watching television, the surround-sound from our speakers goes to zero. If I then leave the television on, but turn the sound system off and back on and wait a few seconds, the speakers come back on.

I have checked the wiring on the back of the unit--nothing appears to be loose.

Update: microwave and hair dryer use cause the same phenomenon.
