Furnace sound issue

Hello all, Very strange issue with my Suburban furnace. This morning I heard spurts of hissing air coming from somewhere. I narrowed it down that the sound was coming from my furnace which of course isn't being used. The sounds were off and on but consistent and at times a bit more noise. After about 30 minutes the air blowing sound stopped. Has anyone experienced this or know what's going on? Thanks in advance for any info about this.

Can you explain the term "heater"? Do you mean your furnace or perhaps your water heater?

Did you perhaps smell any propane? This "hissing" could be a propane leak and only quit after all the propane escaped. Are your propane tanks open or closed?

I also edited your thread title to reflect 'furnace" instead of heater

No smell at all and my furnace is right behind me. Propane is turned off.

Went outside and one of the propane tanks was on and empty. I don't recall if it was empty previously. I smoke so if the hissing was propane seems I would have blown up!

Depends on if the propane (if it was such) vented away from you. I can't think of what much else it could be. Maybe someone else has ideas.

It has me stumped. When it becomes cool enough to use I'll find out then possibly what's going on. Thanks for your input.

Before I used any appliance, I would have a qualified person inspect for gas leaks.

A propane leak is a VERY serious situation.

Yes it definingly is. Before Winter I could turn the propane on without turning on the furnace to listen for a leak.
