Magic Chef Microwave Advisory

After our run today from Tucumcari to Gallup we entered the trailer to find broken glass everywhere. Somewhere along the way, the glass turntable opened the microwave door and then it did a swan dive onto the cooktop. We found broken pieces of it from stem to stern.

Our microwave has a friction close door. We might have had better luck with a model that has a push to open button?

We found the microwave door securely closed after the incident.

I take the roll left from paper towels, cut in half, stuff one half part way into the other, then put in microwave and push one half up to the top. Does a good job of keeping it in place!

The issue of the broken turntable plate is nothing new and has been an issue going back to when they first started putting microwaves in trailers. Some people stuff a throw pillow in the microwave during travel but I prefer to use the cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls. I cut the tubes to the exact size and put them in.

We just remove the turntable and slide it between the sofa seat cushion and one of the arms when traveling.

As they say, been there, done that. The plate pushes the door open. We put ours in a pouch the daughter made and put it in the closet.

This is all just part of the RV learning curve. Things can get bounced around pretty good in a trailer on bad or bumpy roads.

Many years ago we were driving through a road construction area at the posted speed of 45 MPH and encountered one of those “bumps” in the road construction. When we stopped for the day we discovered the crockpot we always kept in an overhead cabinet had come out, hit the kitchen countertop putting a nice gouge in it and then fell to the floor. The glass lid to the crockpot broke and the crockpot liner cracked too. Needless to say we now store all appliances in areas close to the floor.

Things happen when you’re an RVer and I don’t think there is an end to the learning curve.

Found ours on the floor once but it didn't break!! I put a little hook in the
cabinet next to the MW and we used a tiny bungee cord from the hook
thru the door handle back to the hook.

There are lots of ways to secure the door and glass turntable but the
dealers rarely tell you that you need to do it!!

Bummer that you found out the hard way!

Being an RV sales consultant . . . . . . . . Really?

We go through the entire unit with our customers advising on 100+ different things.

The rest is up to common sense.

We went to the dollar store and bought a foam pool noodle. I cut it to fit snugly to hold the glass in place. We have since removed the microwave and finished the inside of the cabinet in favor of more storage space. Still undecided on whether to sell the microwave or keep it in the event we someday sell the trailer and the new owner prefers to have the oven.

X2 on the pool noodles. They are good for many things. They can be cut and used as slideout bumpers, 5th wheel pin box bumpers, etc. They really have multiple uses and we keep finding more!

We had 1 jump out and 1 exploded doing popcorn.
I bought replacments at good will. My final repair was to heat coffee in my buba cup and 🔥 burn up the old on and get a install kit and get biger micrwave with push to open. Tray no longer jumps out but only off notches.

Got that same microwave but never had an issue. I guess the 5er rides smooth enough down the road it doesn't get jostled.

I have always placed my Longaberger Napkin basket in there and now we have a Splatter cover and that fits above the basket. So things are tightly secured. 3rd Flagstaff and "Hand to the LORD" never had a problem like broken glass....

I like the idea of using it for bread - I've been putting my bread and buns and newspapers and cutting boards in the oven. This new camper has a much bigger oven and the possibilities are endless of what I can store in there.... Lord knows I don't usually use the oven... that's a conversation I'd like to see sometime - who does and does NOT use their oven...
