Replacing Dometic Refrigerator Roof Vent Shroud

Need to replace the roof shround. Any tips or things to watch out for ? It looks like there are just four screws that hold the top cover on. Is it that simple ? The base coming through the roof seems OK -- just the cover disintegrated and blew away in storage during the last storm. Would you just put some silicone sealant over the tops of the screws after installation, or how are they sealed ? Thanks !

That's it. Just four screws with a little sealant over the hole.

The sealant is not even required, as the hole into which the screws go to hold the Top portion of the vent cover do not go all the way through the base.

The sealant will, however delay the rusting of the mounting screws, which look like a long Deck Screw and are normally made of poor quality metal.

The best option is to use a stainless steel screw to prevent the rust problem.

Also, there are (or at least were when I was in the business) two major roof vents and they look somewhat alike, Norcold and Dometic. They are not interchangeable unless you also change the base.

CAMCO also came out with a "universal" Fridge Roof Vent replacement top that will fit either the Norcold or Dometic, and it is less expensive.

Funny story, as an aside. When CAMCO first came out with the their "universal" top, I had a customer buy one and return it stating that the holes did not line up. He had a Dometic Fridge. When I called CAMCO, their first question was "Is it a Winnebago?", which it was. Turns out Winnebago has their own plastics plant (or used to) and molds a lot of their items that "look" similar to other OEM products, but are not exact duplicates.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try to tackle it this weekend. Right now I have a cat litter box turned upside down with a rope tied from the antenna to the door step. Should work until I replace the shroud -- but it looks like crap !

For the most part they use the same topper .

IF you have a dealer close by take it off and run it to the dealer to match it up
my 2005 flagstaff had the same topper as my 2011 sabre does .

Check PPL RV parts in Houston, they aren't cheap but neither are RV stores, they will UPS to you in a few days.

Camco makes Fridge Vent cover that will fit Dometic /Norcold. Replaced mine this past summer. Camco cheaper than OEM

You can also go this route. Cover has solar power vent fans.

Installed the Camco Universal cover this past weekend. It was a relatively easy job. The hardest thing was getting the old screws out. I assumed they were phillips head screws (couldn't really see the heads since they were recessed and covered with sealant). Turns out they were square hole like most of the exposed screws in the trailer. Once I got the right tool, they came out pretty easy.
