Sewer smell when A/C is running
We have a 28' Coachmen Apex. This is our 3rd summer with it. While out camping last week, we turned on the air and after awhile it began to smell like sewage in our trailer. The black and gray tanks were both closed. I felt like the smell was the worst when I would open the bathroom sink cabinet. I have a hard enough time running the air because it is loud and now with this smell, I really don't want to even turn it on. I faintly remember this happening last summer too. Please help!

I would think the smell is being drawn into your rig by the a/c from your rooftop sewer vents. If that's the case there are different types of vent pipe covers you can try. Also might want to switch the chemicals you use in your tanks. We use Odorlos and rarely have any smell issues.

Oh... Also check your a/c filter inside, and then go up on the roof, take off the shroud and make sure your drip pan is draining properly and not leaving stagnant water in the pan.

We had the same problem with our Cedar Creek 34RL. I found a vent under the bathroom sink and replaced it. Since then.......no smell. You need to go to Home Depot and get one of these: Oatey 1-1/2 in. ABS PTC In-Line Cheater Vent-39012 - The Home Depot
It is a one-way vent that allows air to enter the waste tank. It is supposed to keep the foul air inside but sometimes they leak. Just replace it and you will be good-to-go.

It sounds like the air admittance valve, as mentioned above. Easy to clean, or perhaps replace. Look for it under the bathroom sink. It is pvc and just screws on.

Learned something new today! I've never heard of a vent inside the rig! I looked at ours and thankfully don't have one. Thanks for the new info!!!

Besides that the a/c does not draw outside air to the inside.

Hey turbs! You know I've heard that, and know that's the way it's supposed to work but it sure seems like those nasty outside odors come in when the a/c is on

Probably your air drawing in smell from the campgrounds sewer vent pipe. If you see a pipe sticking 8 to 10 feet up from the ground don't camp in that site.

Smell
Though we have a Class A..beware that your battery(s) when overcharging will tend to boil up sulphuric acid and eventually explode...true..have actually experienced this issue and was fortunate to research the Forum and find out the problem......one battery was actually boiling and getting ready to explode!
Hoping this is not your problem,
George

Photo under sink in bath. See the black pipe going up from the trap? The valve is at the top.
Hmmm. Photos are sideways.

Thanks! Hubby replaced the air gap/admittance valve under the bathroom and kitchen sinks. We will know if it worked the next time we take it out. Appreciate all the comments and suggestions!

Sometimes called that, but proper name is air admittance valve, because it allows air to move into the drain but not out.

If this under sink trap doesn't work, then check the direction of the prevailing winds when your AC is on. If the roof vent is upwind of your AC and you smell it, but you don't smell it when it's downwind, then it is coming from the roof vent.
