Any thoughts on starlink mini? How much data is 50 G?
Best backup camera for the buck?
Pet temp sensor recommendation? Any w/o subscription?
Thanks Bob

Sorry. My question on "how much data is 50G" is at best ambiguous. We have utube tv. Is there a ballpark conversion of Gigs to hours of streaming TV?
Thanks Bob

50 GB is not much if you plan on streaming TV. And it varies depending on the streaming service and platform. About 4 hours of Netflix can burn 4 to 12 GB depending on if streaming standard or high def.

OT, but just last weekend we were camping in a "no service" zone and STARLINK open network showed up on our phones as an available network. My bride made a call to my granddaughter in Anchorage, and the system worked. The network was available for about 45 minutes and then it was gone. The train of STARLINK satellites must have been moved.

We use about 10gb a day. Tv, internet, etc. keep in mind updates from Starlink count too and will be often at first.

50 G is 50 Gig.

Nobody would have a service in 2024 that is limited to 50 Megabytes.

Apparently Starlink does......or is your reply to say that no one would buy such a plan? It appears that this plan is meant for periodic back country and emergency use.

"For the adventure seeker on-the-go across North America, the Mobile Regional option gives users unlimited inland mobile data for $150 a month. If you'd prefer a set mobile data cap at 50GB, the monthly cost drops to $50 for inland access across the continent. "

Starlink mini wasn’t worth it until now when it’s offered as a standalone subscription. Before, you were required to have a home system/subscription and the mini roam packages were added to it at the current pricing, big bucks to me.
Now the hook is you pay the price for unlimited data but if your system is moving at 10mph it shuts down. BUT if you get the limited data plan (that you are likely to use up and be required to buy more data packets), then it will operate while traveling.
Regardless, you still pay the same for the hardware, $500+.

Huh?

You can not connect directly with a cell phone to the Starlink satellites. Someone close to you had a Starlink system and had their Starlink network (router) not password protected. That's what you were connected to. The they either booted you or powered down.

After the initial 50GB, you are charged $1.00 per GB of download thereafter until the next billing cycle starts. And, you can pause your service for the months you don't camp.

Actually, it's been tested to work at 80mph. I can't say that it will continue this way of course.

Define "pet temp sensor". I simply rely my EasyTouch RV thermostat. It will alert me if the temp goes above or below a temperature I set. There is no subscription fee. I really love this thermostat, I can set schedules, I can turn the AC on before I go to the RV, etc.

We got this temp sensor for our "feel goods", works great as long as you have internet.

I use two of these in the RV (one in fridge, one in living room) and 2 at home (garage freezer, kitchen fridge). They work great so far, like said, as long as your have internet. You can set up temp and humidity alarms to help monitor. We don't go too far away with the dogs in the trailer so we can get back in plenty of time. I monitor the internet connection externally, so I know if the internet connection drops.

The Mini is for hikers

Like said before, the Mini is designed for backpacking in the boon docks. Using your pad or cell phone.

We have 2 Gen 2 units. One is when we don’t travel, the other when we do. The fixed one is $120/mo. The mobile is $150/mo. Both are unlimited usage though StarLink says the mobile is “Best Effort” on band width. We have never had an issue east of the Big Muddy.

You can suspend service and start it back up at will. You will get charged a full month though.

We are in west Central Florida and just went through a multi day torrential rain event. Never lost service. Wifi and streaming the entire time.

We are extremely pleased with our Starlink!

Pet temperature

We have these and really like them. It doesn’t use WiFi and includes 2 years of service.

Pet temp - we use Waggle. Is AWESOME! It does have an annual subscription fee but it is well worth knowing that my rig is at the right temp for my pet.

Just remember y'all, there is no transparent means to evaluate usage between services or at different times on each service. So besides the format of the reception at the time in terms of 480/720/1080/4k, there are also the amount of back hauls on your reception and the routing of the reception where the intermediaries suck band width from your transmission to run their switching. So what works at one moment may not be the usage at another. In addition the systems have the ability to switch up or down the accrual of usage to max out those with less capacity thereby creating capacity on the network for higher payers or to force you to pay more.

Cable systems perfected this process back in the day of the (so called) higher speed modems (28 and 56k) so that they could upcharge people, improve their yield and show Wall Street how successful they were at converting customers to revenue. Its been perfected since then.

Just like going to the gas station and getting a different (unknown price) for every gallon while filling. No oversight like the gas stations are supposed tohave but it wont be long before they have infinitley variable refill pricing too.
