Starting Fridge On Propane

Hi guys. Just joined the group and a new rver. I bought a 2001 Flagstaff 21fb and I don't see where the pilot light is on the fridge is. Does it have an auto start pilot light or am I just not finding it yet. Thanks in advance Chillywillie. From the foothills of the rockies in Calgary

Welcome to the forums! Do you know what brand & model number your fridge is?

Our unit is two yrs old - the fridge has two "on" settings, gas and auto. Put it in auto and if there is no 120 VAC electric power it starts automatically with gas (as long as the propane tank valve is open). No pilot light involved.

My old '98 Jayco PUP had a small "sight-glass" inside, which allowed you to see the lit pilot, so that you could verify from the inside that it is on. My two units since then, have both had an inside trouble light, which let you know if the fridge WASN'T working. Like TinCup said, if you want to be sure, go outside by the vent and listen closely.

a pic of your fridge' s button/controls would help.
also, make and model of fridge would also help.
newer fridges have auto lighting feature.
not sure if that was around in 2001.

First of all - Welcome to Forest River Forums! Hope we can help you.

You really do need to give us the make and model number of the fridge (e.g., Dometic DM2652).

As Bikendan said, your camper might be gas/elec but it might not considering its age. The newer Flagstaff Micro lites are gas/elec.

If it has a control panel that looks like this one ...

Than, the following applies...

To allow the fridge to choose between AC or Gas:

  • On/Off button is depressed to "on"
  • Gas button needs to be pushed in.
  • The "auto" light will light up and it will choose AC first and then gas if AC is unavailable.

If you wanted gas only and not AC:

  • On/off button is depressed to "on"
  • Gas button needs to be out.
  • The "auto" light will not light up.
The gas button "out" effectively locks out the electric.
