Suburban thermostat guidance...

Hi all!
I have a Micro-Lite 18FBR. It has a suburban heater and furnace. Initially, I couldn't get it to work last time I had it out, but that was operator error. Working well, now. But I was looking at the thermostat. Not sure how to set it, other than the slider on top for warmer/cooler. What is the "longer cycle" thing that sits on the coil. How does it work? And how should I set it? Also, any suggestion on a digital to replace it with?

That is called a heat anticipator. What it does is when you reach the set heat temp on the stat it will keep the burner on a little longer. ( its very old style ) If you set it to low your stat will not llet your burner come on when the set point drops. You can replace that with a different stat from home depot digital type. A lot of people have but I do not know which one they did it with. Look up a couple of threads type in thermostat or something. Some people have also added a separate switch on the stat for high and low blower speeds.
