There's an obscure note in the middle of the 500-page Owner's Manual that came with our 2015 GMC Sierra pickup. It says something like "The voltage available to charge the trailer battery can be increased by driving with the headlights on."

It's a side effect of raising the charging voltage on the truck to accommodate the increased current draw of the headlights.
