when can run refrigerator

Have a 2021 Geo Pro with a 12v refrigerator. A guy in a video said do not run the fridge when running down the road -- only run fridge when the rv is level. Is this correct?

Mine runs just fine going down the road.
The reason you don't want your fridge to run while unlevel is it needs the oil to drain back to the compressor.
But if your trailer is going down the road it is tilting back and forth giving the oil a path back to the compressor.
I would not run the fridge sitting in storage if it was not within a couple degrees of level.
I used to install refrigerators, The manufactures required that new one sat in place for a half hour before startup. This was so that when tilted on its side it has time to drain its oil back. but sitting slightly unlevel won't hurt the compressor, it has to do with how the door closes and seals. DR

New fridges use a different oil and refrigerant than the old days. New designs have the compressor at the lowest point and closest to the backside. Thus transporting a fridge or freezer on its back is perfectly safe and OK.

As to RV fridges, going down the road, around curves, and up and down hills averages out to be "level".

Once at the campsite or storage site, yes, level +/- 2 degrees is suggested. it is less critical with electric power, i.e. 120 volts or 12 volts. If one is using LP, then YES, level becomes very important.

Never trust “a guy in a video”, read the owner’s manual!

Sounds like video guy is confusing a 12 volt compressor fridge with an absorption fridge.

In the RV style compressor fridges the manual says install on a level flat surface. It says nothing about it having to be perfectly level to operate. At least in the manuals I have read.

In Marine models they specify within 15 degrees because boats tilt……they all have the same compressors. Just the Rv industry has no need to specify it. It is implied.

... and not just the guy in the video!

Other earlier "contributors" are also confusing the two.

Absorption vs. compressor fridges.

One of the reasons / benefits of the RV industry going to 12v, was that they CAN be run while on the road.

Out of level on an absorption fridge will definitely shorten life and running it while under way can be dangerous and in some places, forbidden.

Insert the "I've always done it with no problems" posts here.

Doesn't change the facts.

My 12V fridge is always on as well, whether sitting in the driveway, towing, or at the campsite.
