300 mile and less escapes from DC

CRITERIA: 32' RV. Back in or pull thru are fine. Generally prefer state park settings over look at your neighbor RV resorts, but won't rule out RV resorts. Can boondock but like electric /water hookup. Don't need pool, laundry facilities, doggie parks, etc. DESIRE either nice campground setting, nice views (water, etc) and/or access to local activities/sights/event.

That said what are your FAVORITE campgrounds in the following areas (i.e. <300 miles from Washington, DC area:

- Poconos, PA
- Rehoboth/Bethany Beach, DE
- Virginia Beach, VA
- Finger Lakes, NY
- Outerbanks, NC

Thanks
Kevin

If you'd be interested in the Laurel Highlands of Western PA, Laurel Hill State Park, Kooser State Park and Shawnee State Park have some nice spots to park your rig.

We have some nice private campgrounds too.

We enjoy more of the "RV Resort" atmosphere, so this may not be overly helpful, but some of our favorites, in no particular order:
Cherry Hill (College Park MD)
Kings Dominion KOA (Doswell VA)
Fredricksburg KOA
Americamps (Ashland VA)
Williamsburg KOA
Christopher Run (Mineral VA)
Bull Run (Centreville VA)

It might be a tad bit further, but for a relaxing atmosphere, Natural Tunnel SP can't be beat. From DC, it's out I-66, the I-81 south until you get to the Tennessee line, then 17 miles north on Rt 23 (limited access 4-lane highway).

It has lots of activities in the surrounding area, especially if you like bluegrass music, since it is on The Crooked Road.

I feel like you're going to get a lot of options that aren't on your list. Hope you're OK with that!

In Pennsylvania is a little state park called Pine Grove Furnace SP. It's where I developed a love of camping and the campground that I compare all others to. Behind the campground is a little stream with native trout and just down the road are 2 lakes with swimming areas. Miles upon miles of excellent fishing. And you can hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail.

We haven't stayed in Rehoboth Beach, but you might consider the state or national park at Assateague. If you go to that area, there's a restaurant in Fenwick Island, DE that has the absolute best italian food I've ever had and the wood-fired pizza that I compare all others to. It's called Mancini's Brick Oven Pizzeria.

Pine Grove Furnace is also the Half way point as the trails stands at this time, it does move as the trail is adjusted.

KOA Cape Hatteras on outer banks. It resort style and pricey but it's right on the beach. Can camp on ocean side or sound side. Camp Hatteras is right next door. Smaller CG, not as pricey as KOA. We like to go in September after kiddies are back in school. Less crowded.

Endless Caverns in near New Market, VA. Very nice park, sites are far enough apart to offer some spread out room. Nice walking trails, and cavern tour.

Seashore State Park is between Rehoboth and Ocean City, short walk to ocean. Pocahontas State park 20 mins south of Richmond VA. We like the biking trails there.

Thanks. My great-grandma was born in Duffield. I saw the sign for Natural Tunnel as we were heading toward the Cumberland Gap. Good to know it's worth visiting!

Just something to add that might help suggestions but is there a certain time that you are looking for? That might narrow down some thoughts because of weather or even a possible holiday time frame.

Trap Pond State Park in De. is very nice. Northernmost cedar swamp in the US. Good for boat tours, kayaking, hiking and close to the shore.

Also, I see that you are an HD fan, so at Natural Tunnel you are within easy driving distance of the Head, Back, Claw etc. of the Dragon. There are about 12 of them close by. Tail of the Dragon is about 2 1/2 hr driving distance, but that one is so used and travelled, it doesn't make for a fun ride anymore. Those others are FUN and there are lots of others that are just as fun a ride, but are not named.
