The NP's are nice - but have a few drawbacks. We stayed at Blackwoods last summer. The NP's aren't site specific, so you get what they give you, but we had a decent site. Very few of those sites where solar friendly but otherwise, this is a perfect spot for your Roo. The campground bathrooms were new and quite nice, but no showers. You have to use the pay showers outside the entrance. They were close by an clean. Kind of a hassle, but considering we saved about $70 a night it was tolerable. Blackwoods is in a great location. You can walk to the overlook of the ocean, its right on the south trail head for Cadillac Mountain, and close to Bar Harbor and the carriage trails in the park. The park was very quite after dark and just peaceful and relaxing. And the park rangers put on a couple of excellent programs at the amphitheater. Our son dragged us to the first one - but after that my wife and I where as into it as he was,
For our next trip we're thinking we will try Sea Wall which is on the island but farther south. We drove through and checked it out. Nice area. The sites are a little close, but great ocean front views you can walk or bike to. Same trade-off as Blackwoods - no hookups or on-site showers, but a fraction of the cost.
There are a bunch of private campgrounds on the island as well. The KOA on the water looks really nice, as do several of the others. For us, we liked the rustic feel of the NP's, but if full hookups and more amenities are your thing there are several good options.
Last thought - we went the second to last week of August. Things were busy, but we were able to drive to Bar Harbor and park in town. Also able to drive into the park and park at the carriage trail head. Our friends were there in July and that was not the case, so depending on your schedule, that may be a consideration. The bus service is good though if you do go during the peak season.
Regardless od where you stay - we don't have many NP's here on the east coast, and Acadia is absolutely worth a visit.
