Acadia National Park campgrounds

The Wife and I are thinking of maybe going there for a week in the future. What are the Federal campgrounds are like and what are the state, private campgrounds in the area. Thanks

We're going to Smugglers Den in July. Friends have stayed there for a number of years and really like it. There's another thread on here about camping in the area with lots of good information. Have fun and happy camping.

We also stayed at Smuggler's Den a few tears back and it was ok. (full service)(Shuttle Bus available free0
Another campground we stayed at was Bar Harbor Campground.....They don't take reservation or credit cards. It's first arrive, first serve. (water/ electricity only)
Last year, and this coming summer, we will be at Schoodic Woods Campground, which is a federal campground. That one is new and is a gem. (Water, electricity only, and no public showers)
Schoodic Woods Campground is part of Acadia National Park, but is about an hour drive from Bar Harbor, near where the main area of the park is located. Three ways to get to Bar Harbor and the main entrance to Acadia NP:
1- Take your car
2- Go to Winter Harbor (15 minutes away) and take the passenger ferry (no cars) that will bring you to Bar Harbor. From there, there's a shuttle bus that will bring people anywhere they want to go throughout the park at no cost.
3- Take the Shuttle bus from the campground (FREE....and tanks to L.L.Bean for providing those buses)

We did Bar Harbor KOA last year, bucket list item for us too. Camped right on the water.
Bar Harbor CG does have full hookups but no reservations so you need to be there early for any opennings.
X2 on Schoodic Woods NP CG , bring a bike great trails and one way scenic drive, you can bring the bikes on the ferry.
Blackwoods NP CG looked a little tight and awkward for our MH so we passed on that. Seawall NP CG does have some nice pull thru sites no hookups.

Black Woods is tight and not very level with no hookups and no cell service last I went there but it is right off the loop road and ocean. Great for biking, no car access.
Bar Harbor campground is great with some nice views and services. A nice place to stay.

Oceanside KOA is great. We've been ther two times with our 3170DS. They're right on the free shuttle line and they're also pet friendly. There's a little outdoor restaurant right inside the campground. We took our three Newfoundlands swimming and made many friends during our stays.

If you don't mind a little drive to the park we stayed a week at Pleasant River campground in Addison. On the river - only 6 or 8 rvs on very large plots. Family run by local lobster fishing family and very rural , pleasant and quiet. Fresh lobster on site. Close to a real rural fishing village in Jonesboro.

we stayed at Narrows Too and really enjoyed it. We were in an Ocean front site and pulled in with a great water view. We were lucky to get an end spot, 400 and had plenty of room. The sites that are not on the ends are tight. The Best Ocean Front sites are very large with vegetation between each site and you cannot even see your neighbor. Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound just down the street is excellent!

IF you don't mind a little drive you can go to the "quiet side" of Mt Desert Island. About a 30 min drive from Bass Harbor to Bar Harbor. We stayed at
Bass Harbor Campground. They accept reservations and have some full
hookups. We had water and electric. It's biking distance from the Light house of the same name.
We would definitely stay there again. It was way less crowded than the NP camp grounds we drove thru while we were there!

Bass Harbor is an idyllic little harbor that is right out of a picture post card!
We loved it.
Also took the Island tour. https://bassharborcruises.com/
The couple that own this boat are residents. They were born and raised
right there and they live there year round. It was one of the most interesting
boat tours we have ever taken. Don't miss it!!

I've heard great things about Schoodic Woods. It is new, with elec & water hookups. It is off the beaten path but great biking trails. I stayed at Blackwoods and like the proximity to the picturesque sites. Someone said "no car access" and not sure what that meant. Many sites are pull-thru with no hook ups but there is a dump station and water. Sites are not level and kind of close together but was easier to get in and out than at first appeared. Thanks to LL Bean's for a great free shuttle service. Once parked, you don't really need your car! It is timely and often. You won't be disappointed no matter where you stay

People have to consider the price too:
I just checked a site for a week beginning of July, and here's their price for an oceanfront site:
7 nights: $654.00
Resort Fee: $28.00 ( what on earth is that !!!!)
Tax: $61.38
Total: $743.38

That is $106.00 a day for camping

Yes, for me this is a BIG consideration! Another reason NP look so attractive. Good luck in getting a site in July (Schoodic, being new, hasn't been "discovered" by many - this will end). As for the "Resort fee" - this is the new trend on upping the price/cost without officially "upping the price". Quite common in Motels/vacation spots everywhere!

Bar Harbor KOA was over $100 a nite on the water-water and electric only- when we stayed last year but it was a bucket list item, its the first thing you see at the island side of the causeway after 3 nights moved on to Bar Harbor CG 1/2 the price

We have reservations at Schoodic Woods Campground for June 30 thru July 6 for 150.00 dollars for six nites. Site #4 big pull thru with water and 50 amp. This is with the( Interagency Senior Pass ) that anyone 62 or older can get for 10.00 dollars for a lifetime pass. The normal rate without the pass would be 240.00, the pass has a 90.00 dollar discount. That's 25.00 per nite! The Senior Pass is good at most if not all C.O.E./ U.S. Forest / government/ National parks ect... We use the C.O.E. parks whenever we can , due to the price and mostly paved level sites that are not on top of each other and very clean.

We just took the truck there for a look. It is a pretty campground. Now we didn't see any food places around the campground. We saw no restaurants. We plan on going back, maybe this year
