Assateaque State Park 2018 Season Changes

Assateaque State Park will be making changes the campground for 2018.

Exciting Changes Coming To Assateague State Park for 2018 Season!
Assateague Island is an always-changing barrier island; each time you visit, you will experience something different as the ocean, winds, and sands continue to move. More and more, these natural factors along with higher tides and more intense storms have resulted in regular damage to the dunes that protect the infrastructure at Assateague State Park. In order to protect these facilities and the natural resources of the park, the Campground Improvement Project will relocate five camp loop roads away from the base of the primary dune and will include the relocation or elimination of several campsites located at the eastern-most part of the loop. This will allow for dune migration westward over time and dune stabilization in the areas where it is the most fragile.
As part of the reconfiguration, the Assateague State Park campground will update the lettering and numbering system used to identify individual campsites. While we understand there will be some inherent confusion with changing to a new configuration, we are confident that in short time our visitors will adapt to the new system and layout and become as familiar with these as they are now.
Please note that if you will be making reservations for the 2018 camping season, you will be directed to the updated maps and lettering/numbering system. We are excited to share these changes with you and look forward to providing quality camping experiences on Assateague Island for many years to come.
Phase I of the Assateague Campground Improvement Project will include the relocation of five campground loop roads, shifting them 20 to 100 feet westward away from the primary dune; loops affected are: C, D, E, F, G, and H. Work will include the relocation or elimination of several campsites located at the eastern-most part of the loop. This strategy will allow space for migration of the dune westward while still maintaining access to each camping loop. In addition, the plan calls for the creation of a small number of more primitive, walk-in style campsites on the southern portion of the current J Loop camping area with a small parking lot adjacent to Bathhouse #9. The total number of campsites will be 342.
Phase II of the Assateague Campground Improvement Project will include stabilization and reinforcement of the current dune system through the addition of sand to the western side of the dune. This will broaden the dune and create a more stable and resilient profile that has been developed from an analysis of historical data on tides, waves, and storm surges. Additional measures include renovations of crossovers, planting of stabilizing dune grasses, and installation of dune fencing on the west side. These measures are an effort to add stability and strength to the current dunes and provide protection from higher than average tides, intense storms, and storm surges.
Phase I of the project is scheduled for fall of 2017 to be completed prior to the 2018 camping season. Phase II is currently scheduled to take place in the fall of 2018. Changes in campground configuration will impact reservations being made for the 2018 camping season as the names and numbers of many of the camping loops will be changing. Please refer to the additional information provided for maps of the campground layout and the new campground letter/numbering system.
Please continue to monitor our Assateague State Park website for further updates. We appreciate the patience of all of our campers and your interest in this project. We are dedicated to providing a high quality camping experience on Assateague Island for many years to come.
The new system will be used beginning with the 2018 camping season. Campsite numbers will now be sequential starting from 1 through 342. Loop letters are unchanged for Loops A & B. Beginning with Loop C, configurations/locations have been changed so please check carefully when looking for the new name of a favorite site. Thank you for your patience as we make these changes!

What would be really exciting is if they added more electric loops besides the H loop which books a year in advance.

More electric sites most likely not going to happen as 20yr tidal rise predictions will require future reconfigurations.

I lived in and around OC during the 80's. Those barrier islands change every winter. I used to do a lot of surf fishing on Assateague and come spring the campgrounds, roads, everything there can be almost completely buried in sand depending on the winter storms. Its a massive job what they go through to get them ready for the season.

Pocomoke State park inland and south a few miles is a hidden gem in the area.........but take lots of bug spray.

We have camped at Pocomoke RSP many times, on both sides of the river at Shad landing and Milbun landing. Great place. Another gem is Janes Island SP near Crifield.

Assateaque

Thanks FlyBob for the update, I'll be there for a couple of weeks the end of June. Used to go every year but haven't been in some time, now as retirement comes close and the kids now have grandkids it's time to restart the tradition. Looking forward to seeing how my Roo catches the breeze. Was there about 15 years ago when the temps hovered around 100 all week and hope not to experience that again.
