Head over and pick up I-81 south then you could pick up I-64 east to Richmond, now there is one decent climb on 64 but probably the best route, some might suggest Rt.17 but I have not been that way.

There are a few back roads that will run south and by-pass DC. But you will be hitting alot of traffic.
As posted, the most trouble free (maybe a bit longer mileage wise) is to catch I-66 to I-81, than down to I-64 and east to Richmond.

From Hagerstown most of us truck drivers take 81 south to 66 east to route 17 south I think it's exit 27 or 28 take that all the way to 95 south. There's usually a ton of RVers going that way.
