Best route to Williamsburg

Going on our maiden voyage with the new tt next week to koa Williamsburg. I see two possible routes.... Over the big bridge and tunnel or the long way via i95. Any input is welcome.

Look at Rt 301 also, then there are options from there but a starting point would help

Sorry about that.... We are coming from greenville nc. Main two routes look like hwy 11/13 to Suffolk but that is a huge bridge. The other is 95 to Richmond but I know there is a bridge there also. And it's 45 miles longer.

Why not go 1 way and come back another....a little change of scenery.

If you are concerned about bridges, then I-95 may be the way you want. I-664 near Hampton Roads has bridges and a tunnel. Plus, traffic seems to always be backed up on I-64 westbound between Hampton Roads and Williamsburg where the road goes from 4 lanes to 3, and again when it goes to 2 lanes. I-64 eastbound does not seem to have that problem.

If it were me, I would travel i-95 to get there, and the other route coming back......if tunnels and bridges aren't a problem. You will have to stop and have a VDOT inspection to confirm that your propane tanks are turned off before going through any tunnel......you can close the valves at the inspection station if you like. If I stop for a break within 50 miles of an inspection station, I go on and cut the fridge off and close the valves then to save a little time at the VDOT stations.

Have you ever thought about taking the Jamestown/Williamburg Ferry??? If you have never been on a ferry I would recommend it. Oh ya it's FREE.

We live in the area. Highly recommend avoiding I-64 and the tunnels. If you must , plan to transit other than during rush hour times.

Thanks driver! We are planning to drive north next Friday am. By the time we get to va should be about 10. So you are suggesting driving 95 north to Richmond and then over to Williamsburg.

10 am you should "probably" be good going thru tunnels and up 64 if u choose that route. Will have to stop at tunnel for inspection. It's just hit/miss this time of year because of the beach traffic.

We've driven home from FL, etc and our gps always routes us up 95 through Richmond FWIW. Definitely less likely to have any travel delays.

We are also looking at the ferry. Just not certain about taking the tt on that for the first trip

Just an FYI propane is banned from the I95 tunnels. I know many people say they never have a problem and sail right on through. Perhaps that works best if your headed north, but heading south several years ago, I was with a family member in a class c motor home and they shut down all the lanes down and pulled us from the far left across all lanes and made us exit before the tunnel. This happened while pulling up to the toll booths

When I towed to Disney a few years ago,I took the bridge. I don't want the fine or the embarrassment

Concur, but no tunnels on I95 between NC and Richmond, VA.

Planning on using the ferry going north. Might take the bridge back. Try to save those 70 miles

WE just came from there (7/12- 7/18). Now we came from the north and used I95 and I64. Both were good roads for pulling. Every morning I would watch the news and their always seemed to be issues with the tunnel/bridges with traffic. But if you are coming in after rush hour it should not be a problem. It is a nice campground by the way.

We were there on our way back from Niagara. 7/8-7/11. Don't remember which side they called it. I was the first driveway. I-64 was shut down and all traffic was diverted to side streets going in on the 8th. Nightmare...
Campgrounds were really nice though...good people
