Bridge Toll in Louisville starts Dec 30

FYI- 3 of the 4 main bridges across the Ohio River at Louisville KY will begin
automatic tolling Dec 30.

The I 64 bridge in NW Louisville in NOT a toll bridge.

The two I 65 bridges downtown as well as the just opened "east bridge" on
I 265 will have tolls.

There are NO toll booths and no slow down. They accept Ez-Pass and
are also issuing local transponders.

Typical tolls can be found here- https://riverlink.com/tolling-info/tolling-rates

A car/truck pulling a one/two axle trailer is same rate as a motor home.
$5 with a transponder and $7 without a transponder.

If you cross the bridge without a transponder they snap your license plate and send you a bill.

I'm still trying to figure out how this works if you are towing a 5er and
the camera can't see your truck plate. I know it will snap your trailer plate but my EzPass transponder is registered to my truck, not my trailer....

Any way this is a heads up that driving the I 65 corridor just got a little more
expensive!

Happy Trails!

They don't know your truck any more or less than they know your 5ver. All they have in either case is a plate. So I'd guess they'll send the bill to the register owner of the 5ver plate. In 99% of the cases, that should also be the owner of the TV.

Do they have signs saying you'll get a bill if you don't have a transponder? I can see folks freaking out if they have no transponder and don't see a cash lane.

We drove across the newest bridge yesterday just to have a look see.
The east bridge passes thru a tunnel and then up and over the river.
We saw several warnings that a TOLL BRIDGE was ahead and finally signs that
this was your last exit before the TOLL BRIDGE! But I only saw one electronic
sign that gave $ amounts and it was difficult to read at 65 MPH.
Note- unlike the long tunnel under the mountain at Middlesboro KY taking you
to Cumberland Gap NP there are no warnings about shutting off LP or anything here.

If you (or I) have an Ez-Pass transponder and money in an account we are
also supposed to have each vehicle we are going to use the transponder in
registered.

In other words I can use my transponder in any of my cars and my truck
and even my motorcycle as long as they are listed on the account.

I was just wondering what the outcome and resulting charge would be if
say my truck is registered but the camera is only able to see my trailer tag which is not listed on the account.

If it reads the transponder and sees a license tag that don't "go together" will I get a normal charge on the account or the higher bill in the mail?

And.... I'm wondering now if I can put my sons car on my account so he
can borrow my transponder.

Much of this can be answered with a phone call but they are swamped
busy right now due to the impending toll start Dec 30. Local commuters are greatly impacted.

Me- I'll likely only cross one of the toll bridges at most 3 or 4 times a year-
maybe 1 round trip with my trailer. So I'm just wondering out loud about some of the details.

AND just to make it a little more interesting- my transponder was purchased in Hershey PA so the account is registered there not in KY! I -think- some of the rules as to number of vehicles allowed on the account and maybe even the annual account fee and necessary re-loads are different in different states.
I'm just relieved that KY went with Ez-Pass and not something else!

A phone call may or may not help you. In Illinois, up until a year or so ago, if you went through an automatic toll and did NOT have a transponder account, you could go on-line and pay via a credit card. However, if you HAD an account, but didn't have the transponder in your car, you could NOT go on-line and pay with a credit card - you had to mail them a check, within 7 days. Does that make ANY SENSE?? I got into this because my son went through a tollbooth in my car but without the transponder, as it was in my wife's car.

So I called them and asked them, "If they could read the license plate and therefore could tell if a non-account person had paid with a credit card and therefore NOT need to send them a bill (or worse), WHY couldn't they read the license plate, look for my account, and charge my card as if I'd had the transponder on-board?" The woman could not answer that question.

I'm guessing the answer was: This is Illinois; we're always screwed up!

Apparently in the last year or so, they've now figured out that they CAN do it.

This is getting to be a pain. Few years ago we camped on Prince Edward Island. I was a little nervous going over that long bridge. But the shock came when I went to leave. Going over- FREE!! coming back $61.00!!!!!
($46 for first 2 axles and 7.50 per trailer axle). We didn't even like P.E.I.. Go to Cape Breton if you want scenery and free access- much prettier than PEI.
Last trip to Florida somehow I got switched over to I-4 at the I-75 interchange. I think I was on it for 4 miles. Two months later when I got home to Michigan I had a toll bill in the mail for $.75 for the toll and a $3.75 late fee. I called them & explained I hadn't been home in 2 months plus I never saw a toll booth anywhere. They said they don't have toll booths there and it's up to me to get a pre-pass card??? Plus I had to pay an additional $3.75 additional late fee for a total of $8.25 to travel 4 miles on their lousy road.
Friends who live in Florida boast about not paying any Income Tax. Well just figure 6% sales tax on all your food and see what that adds up to yearly ( Michigan exempts sales tax on food.

I bought an EZpass in Indiana, registered my motorhome and toad plates. Subsequently drove all the way to Maine, back south through NJ to MD and back to KY with no issues. My son warned me that I had bought an auto pass and could get fined. However, they were more than happy to count my axles and Bill me for same. I expect to use mine in Louisville as we go there frequently.

Toll Bridges

Here in Illinois, we have IPass, which is interchangable with EZPass, and we must load trailer plates also. We even have to load rental car plates if wenuse a ipass transponder. Illinois has to be able to pay bribes and politicians.

So, I am not registered so I pay a higher fee since I have no need for any type of EZ pass living in ID.
I believe I'll write my congress person and suggest they put toll cameras up and down Hwy 20 into Yellowstone and nail out of state drivers for $4.00 for each pass.
What a money maker that would be for ID.

I-Pass

I've run I-Pass from Chicago to Boston towing a car. I listed the RV, tow car and one other car on one transponder and I keep it in the RV. The trip ran through Indiana, Ohio, New York and Massachusetts tollways. During the trip I stopped in the manual lane of the first booth and asked if I could use the automatic lanes. All said yes, they have axle counters and cameras. I used the automatic lanes the rest of the trip and was charged accurately all the way. It was $175 round trip, I looked up each one and it was right for 4 axles.

In Illinois, we don't use the tollway often but when we do we go through the automatic lanes without any transponder. The cameras see the license plate and it shows up as a Video Toll on the statement, same charge as with the transponder in the car.

Welcome to the world of Capitalism folks.....lol...

Candidly I've blown the toll booths on the East-West Illinois tollway numerous times (I have family in Monee)and I have never gotten any notification in the mail. I think their camera's are either dirty or they are broken.

I really dislike driving in or around Chicago at anytime.

I remember years ago being on the Will Rogers Turnpike with no change at all. That was an interesting event to say the least.

No warning, no nothing, just a toll booth with no attendant.

Don't ask how I handled it, you don't want to know....really.

I have ezpass here in New York. When I asked about the ezpass on my motorhome and the towed vehicle (mine is on a tow dolly) I was told to remove the ezpass from the vehicle on the dolly. Just to recheck I had my son also call ,got a different agent but was told the same thing.and that's what we do.Put the ezpass transponder in the towed vehicle in the read preventative bag and away we go.

I've been pulling my TT for 5 years in Illinois with an I-Pass. I have NOT loaded my TT plates and I can find nothing on their website that says I have to. If you can show me where it says I have to, I'd be happy to read it.

Yeh.In NY.if you get a rental car and want to use the ezpass you have to contact them too. I was surprised when they told me to remove the transponder from the towed vehicle.

There is a surface street bridge we call "the 2nd street bridge" but if I were
you towing a big rig I'd just cruise right over the I65 toll bridge and pay the $7 when(if?) you get the bill in the mail.

There is someone that has a truck down in Austin Tx that drives the toll roads. This truck has the same license plate number as my truck with the exception he as a "V" where I have a "Y". I get a bill almost every two weeks for toll charges. I have to call down there and have them check the camera image. Each time they credit my account. This has been going on for almost two years. I am due for new plates on my truck this March. It would cost me an extra $45 to change before then, so I just keep waiting to get my new plates. In the meantime, I am on a first name basis with some of the toll agents down in Austin.

I live in Orlando. FYI there are no tolls on I75 or I4. You must have been on the Florida Turnpike to get the toll. The Florida Turnpike runs from I75 to I4 and on to Miami.

The I4 Ultimate currently under construction in Orlando is adding a toll lane in the middle if you want to use it to get out of traffic in Orlando. I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project

There is no tax on groceries (food) (non-food items yes), you pay a tax on restaurant food, most states have a tax on prepared food.

There are more toll road miles in Florida than any other state, and you only take them if you are in a hurry and want to avoid traffic lights. Any place a toll road takes you, a non-toll road will also go.

When driving around Denver CO on E470 it will cost just under $53 (6 axles) for the entire route to bypass central Denver. There are 5 photo points and each charges every time one passes under the cameras. The cameras record front and rear license plates. Colorado sends a bill through US Postal Service.

I've had my EZPass since we lived in NY. When I called them to inquire about "what happens when I tow my trailer" (5th wheel) they said, I would need to add another transponder to my account to include the truck & trailer. They sent me one (blue one) to put on the windshield when I have the 5er attached.

GPS put me on the Florida Turnpike last year (first time in that area & I still had my Maryland tags) & I saw the "toll by plate" signs. Later we stopped at a Welcome Center and inquired about purchasing a toll pass. The attendant said it wasn't worth it if we were only going to be there a short time but, gave me the web site to go to to pay the tolls (it's posted on the signs also). Sure enough, went on the site a there was a beautiful color picture of the front of my truck & trailer including the license plate. I could even tell what my DW & I were wearing that day & what color lipstick she had on! Sure glad I wasn't pickin or scratchin.......well nevermind. Anyway, I just paid the tolls on line & was done. BTW, there are 2 agencies that charge tolls & you have to pay them separately.

The extreme west end bridge to Louisville from Indiana is NOT a toll. You can take I-265 going West towards New Albany, IN and cross into KY on that bridge, called the Sherman-Minton, and avoid tolls.
You can then take I-264 just after crossing into KY and meet up with 1-65 going south. That interchange is near the Airport and State Fairgrounds.
