I live here in Charleston. When you take a carriage tour you do not get to choose the route. It is assigned to the carriage based on traffic by the city. All carriage tours here are about equal. Boat trip to Fort Sumter and aquarium visit are great. If you drive around visit Angel Oak on John's Island (oldest tree on east coast and about 20 feet diameter) quite spectacular. Civil War museum on Market St is very interesting as is a visit to the Hunley. A lot of history here in Charleston to enjoy.

I'll have to add a stroll along the Battery and Waterfront Park, a meal at Fleet Landing for fresh seafood, Patriot's Point to see USS Yorktown, Boone Hall, Magnolia or Middleton Place Gardens and Fort Moultrie National Park. Enjoy!

How about a recommendation for a plantation?

There are several plantations around us. Boone Hall in Mt Pleasant, Magnolia Plantation or Middleton Place. You can't go wrong with any of these. I almost forgot, Drayton Hall. Drayton, Magnolia and Middleton are West Ashley on Hwy 61. Boone Hall and Drayton Hall give tours of the homes. Middleton and Magnolia are more about their gardens. I'm not sure if tours are given of the plantation house at Magnolia. Only ruins are left of the house at Middleton but the grounds are absolutely gorgeous especially in the spring (Magnolia as well). If you come here in the spring, I would recommend Magnolia or Middleton over the others simply for the flora.

I agree with 02camp's assessment. When we do the FROG Holiday Festival of Lights tour, we go to Boone Hall. The house is not the original, which was just a small frame building, but the "new" house and the exhibits in the slave cabins are very impressive, as is the Avenue of Oaks, a canopy of live oak trees lining the driveway for nearly a quarter of a mile.

We used to go to Magnolia Gardens, but the gardens aren't nearly as impressive in December as they are in the springtime. The tram tour through the swamps and along the Ashley River should be good then too, with the alligators and other wildlife starting to come out of dormancy.
