Very Busy Area the whole month of October. Weather can get chilly that time of year. It is a very fun place to visit during october.

Getting around Baltimore and DC are the challenge. We use 301 from Richmond VA to Wilmington DE then Jersey TP to garden state parkway over the tapen zee bridge and back to the 95 corridor to avoid NYC. 95 the rest of the way.

Btw. 301 can be a bit stop and go in some sections but it’s pleasant and low stress.

I personally like to avoid the major cities, so I would go north on 220 to I-81 at Roanoke, VA, then take I-81 to Scranton PA. There pick up I-84 east to I-90 at Sturbridge MA and then on to and around Boston to Salem. Which ever way you choose to go, I suggest you avoid I-95 from Richmond Va to the Philadelphia region. Traffic around there is a mess, and the loss of the Key Bridge has made it worse.

We were in Salem for Halloween a few years ago. It is a lot of fun but it will be very crowded. Many of the streets are narrow and parking was a bit of a challenge.

We have done that more western route too. The idea of using 301 is to avoid the entire Key Bridge issue.

The problem we found with the Scranton rout is the road conditions. There is about 100 miles of concrete highway with open joints every couple hundred feet that at least with a trailer, becomes a hobby horse effect. NOTHING was in its place when that ride was done.

I agree no 95 between Richmond and NYC. Once in Connecticut 84 to 90 to 128/95 and you’re there

I was going to ask the OP where are you going to stay anywhere near Salem especially in October? I’m not trying to be a downer. I’m genuinely curious

Personally, I'd avoid 95 at all costs...the entire road sucks between Virginia and Maine. We lived 20 minutes north of Salem and we rarely went there over Halloween... stupid traffic and people. They actually bus people in. But... I'd do 74>77>81>84>20>128 north if going directly there. Have you booked anything yet? We'll be in that area in 2 weeks and I was only able to get a campground up in Hampton, NH (currently in Bar Harbor and rain for the next 2 weeks... bummer). Winter Island is the only campground in Salem. Our trip actually takes us to Zooland in Asheboro en route to Florida for the winter, but we're hitting all of the states in between and a bunch of places along the way. We'll wave! Have fun!

I-81 near Scranton has been that way every time I have taken it over the last 50 years. I wonder if there is some geologic issue for those unfilled expansion joints? They are annoyingly bad, plus those nasty little mountains.

IMO, it may be better to avoid going all the way to Scranton on I-81 and possibly take I-80 out of Bloomsburg, PA to I-287 then North to I-84. I have not tried this recommendation, but anything must be better than the Scranton part of I-81.

Just watched the evening news and Bar Harbor is going to be around 80 with a chance of showers for the next week. Don’t know where you’re getting your weather reports man. Lol

We are staying at Winter Island Park. This place is on the tour you take to travel around Salem. So we can get on the tour trolley and takes us down town at no charge.

We only live about 30 miles from Zoo land. I would get a spot in the low section, it is all grass and pretty level. it has No sewer.
But the top section sucks, really unlevel, I couldn't get our MH level it was that bad.
We go to the Yoga bear campgound about 6 miles away. A little more prices. I hope this helps.
Thank for your help.

The GPS on your broom should get you there.

Try Google Maps. I just entered your start and end points and the route avoids all the places you'll want to avoid. 900 miles and 15 hours. Easy drive if you're 28...

Roads were in horrible condition last September in that region. We came most of your route from Richmond.

directions

Hello all,
I am asking you all the best route to get from Greensboro, NC to Salem, Mass.
I will be traveling in our 2008 390QS towing a Fiat.
We would like the best interstates as possible and little to no tolls.
Thank you all
Bill C.

We are on our way back to mass from visiting family in Liberty NC just south of Greensboro. We took that reverse route down. And the same route back. Nice and scenic avoids NYC and the GW bridge as well as the Tapenzee bridge. Only hit some traffic on the way back. What camp ground are you staying at near Salem? I know the closer you get to Boston the more difficult the roads get. Also avoid Storrow drive in Boston.” Low bridge” everyone around here calls it “getting Storrowed” look it up. Mostly college kids with moving trucks.
