Don't Forget the RV Antenna!!!

Was traveling south I95 to Jacksonville, FL this morning...as usual, I was admiring any RV I would see traveling the roads.

Spotted a truck and TT traveling north I95...they forget to crank down the antenna!!!! It was waving & flopping down the interstate...yikes, I'm sure he's gonna have some roof repair on his hand.

if we inspect our rig before we leave
at a good distance away
I like to be proxy 20' out

things like an up antenna or things hanging
or
things not put up

stand out to the eye
all so easy to catch from a distance

That's what happens when you don't follow the checklist.

I do something very similar and always have. I call it the 'Stupid Check'. I'll stand back 30 or so feet and walk all around the trailer examining top to bottom on all sides. On more than one occasion I've spotted something that should have been stowed, disconnected or latched shut.

That's just bad business. It is so easy to do.

For some reason I have the hardest time with my door handle/step railing. I cannot count how many times I have had to stop and close that silly handle. I can admit it, I am door handle dyslexic. You would think I would close it when I stow the steps, but you would be wrong...

when we put the antenna up I hang truck keys on knob that way I have to look at the crank before I can hook up

Driver 39 (Al) gets the outside ready, I get the inside ready. When we THINK we are ready, we switch areas and do a walk through and double check each others work. I left the shampoo and body wash in the shower once and he forgot to undo the dogs tie out once. It helps to have a second set of eyes to do a double check.

I've only done it once- but I was driving in the right land next to a jersey wall. I was so afraid that I wasn't going to have it when I could stop! Our rule for packing up is if the handle is out, the door is unlocked. It goes in when we lock the door. Apparently I missed a step one day- because the door was locked.

I walk around my trailer TWICE after I think I am hooked up and finalized. Despite that, I found my TV antenna up while I was at the dump station. It is incredibly easy to overlook something.

that is a good idea

I used to
tape a piece of small paper to the steering wheel
hard to take off with that thing in my face

many years ago now
but
I still remember
I tore off a vent cover in an old camper I had
yes
pulled under some trees
put the vent up
camped a few days
and
backed out with it still up as leaving camp

I hate learning things the hard way !!

All these ways to remember to put YOUR antennae down..............

did it ever occur to anyone that maybe they were just trying to tape an episode of "OPRAH" while they were on the way to thier next location?

We almost did it today. Dh was hooking up and I had wandered to the koi pond across from our site with DD. Everything was done except snapping up the bars on the hitch. I was walking back and noticed it still up. Oops. Good catch before pulling out.

I learned the hard way. Years ago, I used the MH to take a group of my daughter's high school debating team to a competition out of town. On the way back my daughter asked if they could watch television. I said sure... The antenna was the old bat-wing type. I let her crank it up a couple turns to try to improve the reception, and promptly forgot about it. All was well until we got back to our town. Took the route home I'd taken hundreds of times, which went under a RR underpass. BAM!!! The antenna was up just far enough that the bat-wing part didn't clear, but the crank and the vertical posts fortunately were undamaged. I was able to get a replacement head.

I remember not doublechecking the baggage doors on my last travel trailer only to discover it flapping wildly up and down as I cruised down the highway...argh...good thing for excellent tow mirrors. haha. I was following friends who were pulling their larger TT and was thankful for the walkie talkies we share when we caravan to the dog shows. Great to have a checklist & actually follow it. Thanks for the reminder!

The "Jack antenna" came stardard on our camper it's lower then the a/c unit, and I must say so far it works great, but here is a good one for you we where ina campground walking around during that time a very large Class "A" was leaving the campground as they past us we heard this noise coming from the rear of the motor home, we they where pulling a small car and forgot to either put the car in Nutural or had the parking brake on, the tires where smoking and everyone was yelling trying to get them to stop they finally did stop but there was tire mark from one end of the campground to the exit.

I like the idea of hanging the ignition keys on the antenna crank, seems fool proof.
