East Coast Route Suggestions Canada to Florida

Going from Nova Scotia to Florida I want to choose the best route. Our vacation time is limited so I want to minimize the amount of time we spend getting there.

I hate I-95 through the NE (mainly NY and NJ), so last year we did the 90 to 84 to 81 route which was much smoother.

Looking at the map I wonder if after we cross into MD we could pick up 70/270 to DC where we pick up 95.

Driving through DC is the pits, but the route looks much shorter than staying on 81 til picking up 77 in NC.

Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

95 near DC and through Richmond is always congested and a mess.

Once you are on 81 go to Winchester VA pick up 66 to 17 to 95. You will miss all the mess of Wash. & Balt., both roads are 4 lane and easy traveling with no mountains to go up or down. I have never had a problem going through Richmond.

Route south

I live in the Washington DC area. You want to stay off 95/until you are South of Richmond VA.

Ran your route request through a commercial route planner we use at work...

PCMiler by ALK software had this to say:
This is a comparison of totals between shortest and most cost effective for commercial drivers...
there is a detailed drivers report too but I'd have to post if you're interested

I used Halifax, NS to Key West Airport for endpoints FYI

I use I 95 to VA 17 to I66 to 81 to Scranton, PA , I84, I 90 I495 to I 95 north of Boston and points north to Maine.

From my home in Sebastian, Fl there is 6 miles difference by using I 26, I 77, I 81 and points north to Maine in order to bypass DC,NJ and NYC. I prefer I95 to Fredricksburg,Va and up 17 to I66 to I 81, but occasionally for a change of pace use I26 to I77 to I81. Either route will bypass the I95 corridor from DC to NYC.

Glad I read this thread...we are planning a trip from western Mass to Charleston SC next month using 90,84,81,17,66 to 95. I have the same feelings about driving Boston -DC on 95 with or without the TT.
