Georgia to Utah

Thinking and planning a trip from just outside of Atlanta to Utah.. Have been looking at weather patterns and cannot decide as to when I want to travel.. I would like to miss the hot busy summer months, but do not want to deal with the possibility of dealing with snow and ice.. Seems like spring is the tornado season, and fall has the possibility of dealing with snow in the higher elevations. Anyone that could suggest a good time to travel, and possible route this would be appreciated... We are retired so we do not have to worry about vacation time or children in school.

you're overthinking it. the key is to avoid the crowds in the summer and the weather in the winter. so spring before school is out or fall after school starts. right now is fall and it is gorgeous. tornadoes in the spring would be an issue in the midwest. pick a time, plan your trip, and go. pay attention to the weather but don't obsess over it. the goal is to enjoy and utah is beautiful!

Avoiding the crowds in the summer also means not having some of the attractions open.

Do you have a destination in mind? When we plan, we go to the websites of the National Park or Visitors Bureau and read their recommendations.

Both May/June and Sept/Oct. have less crowds almost anywhere in the country. To avoid the snow, you're looking at July, August, September if you're going in mountain country. (depending on elevation, of course.)

Don't know where you are planning on going or what your tolerance for hot and cold is so it is tough to answer. We are planning a stop following our Alaska trip next summer. Probably be in Bryce the first week of September as the DW hates cold weather. At 10000 feet elevation Bryce gets cold quickly for us. Was in Moab once in August and it was really hot. Best time for it is spring or fall.

Atlanta to Utah sounds like a great trip. How long are you planning to stay on the road? Retired & can travel when you want that is a good feeling. I would choose late
April or early May if going the southern rout to Az before turning north to Utah It may be a little cool in places but shouldn't have snow or ice. Hope you have great trip post some pictures as you go & info on campgrounds or other things you encounter along the way
