Thanks to everyone for support and helpful routing and eating suggestions!
Lamberts was awesome-cheap-good eats and a total experience! No way to
clean your plate in that place! Wow!
As far as the route- going down we took the beach expressway including bypassing the bridge as suggested by Oakman and others. On the way north due to a goof on my part and a GPS that --insisted-- we could turn left onto
the expressway north even tho I was pretty sure we couldn't we wound up
staying on 59 all the way from Gulf Shores to I 65. I guess it added 30-45 minutes over what it could have been if we'd managed to find our way to
the beach expressway north. Traffic was very decent, even low volume on this
week before the Shrimp fest. We totally enjoyed our stay at Gulf State park and rode our bikes on every mile of paved bike trail we could find and they have a LOT of miles of paved bike paths! I think we logged 52 miles on bikes in 3 days. We will go back and stay longer next time! Might even
have to "suffer thru" shrimp fest BUT- I gotta say the Gulf state park CG was at about 20% when we were there and it was nice and peaceful and easy to bike or drive just about anywhere you wanted to go. Can't be like that during shrimp fest! Maybe next year we'll head down just a day or so after the festival...
Beaches weren't empty but if you didn't mind a walk or a short drive and a walk you could find empty stretches of sand. Here's a photo of yours truly on the beach in Bon Secour Nature preserve just west of Gulf Shores.
