When I used to work in NJ I worked with some guys from Boston who would drive. Most of them just used the GW, but some would prefer the longer route of going up to the 287 and taking the tappan zee. Either route they'd say the issue wasn't so much NYC as it was there was no good way past Hartford without getting into traffic.
