Huntsville, Alabama

Just made reservations for Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville for school fall break next month. We are going to definitely check out the Space and Rocket museum and a few other places. This will be our first trip this year. Our last trip last year was to Stone Mountain in Atlanta. Camper had a blow out on the way back on interstate in Atlanta (thank you Castle Rock tires). Those are being replaced this weekend, and i finally got a new truck in June to replace my 2012 Silverado with 250,000 miles. The new GMC Sierra with 6.2 and max tow package should fare a little better.

Anyone have recommendations for good local eats?

That reminded me of another place. We usually stay at Honeycomb CG in Guntersville and always eat at least once at Wintzell's Oyster House in Guntersville. Really good seafood.

Two suggestions from our visit to Huntsville a couple years ago:

First, Cotton Row a high end restaurant downtown off the Courthouse Square. Pluses: They have excellent food and service. Negatives: Parking around the square can be annoying. And their prices are in keeping with their high ratings. Make reservations. I took my wife their for her birthday dinner and she really enjoyed it. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Second, Connors a local Southeastern small chain. Connors also has excellent food and service. I think of it as at the top end of the mid range restaurants. The menu has a lot of varied selections and the prices are reasonable. They opened a restaurant locally in Alpharetta, GA that we frequent.

We visited Huntsville this past February and loved it. Note, when following directions into Monte Sano SP MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE PARK DIRECTIONS INTO THE PARK, not your GPS. If we followed our Garmin it would have been our first white knuckle and near-death screams from the DW since we toured out West two years ago. Many rigs may not be able to make the GPS route and THERE IS NOWHERE TO TURN AROUND.

Sorry for the caps shouting but just trying to emphasize how important the route info is.

This advice can't be understated. My aunt, a Huntsville native, tried to warn me to not go up the backside of the mountain. I figured she was just an old scaredy cat.

We had only owned the 42' fifth wheel pulled by a 22' crew cab long bed truck for about 3 weeks and it was our first long trip (before that, we owned a pop-up tent trailer). We didn't think to check and re-check our GPS routing.

The road went through a neighborhood and I thought, oh hmm... trees.

Then the road got smaller.

Then it started going up hill.

Then the drainage ditches on the side of the road were filled with rocks with teeth.

And then the road got smaller AND trees started encroaching in on it.

And then I got to the first switchback.

I'm 99% certain that I was able to read my trailer's own license plate as I made that turn.

Fortunately, we made the turn and the second switchback isn't so bad. We got up there and I never didn't listen to Aunt Suzie again.
