Indy to Fort Wilderness/Disney World

Ok, we leave for FW Friday the 6th. Original route was take I65 south through Louisville, go I24/Monteagle Pass to Chatanugga, then pick up I75 and head south.

I've had people strongly suggest going to Cincinnati and pick up I75. Even though it's 30 miles longer, they say avoiding Louisville evens it out. Plus the mountains aren't as bad.

Serious comments and opinions, please. Thanks!

I've done both and Mont eagle would my only concern but if you're good with that one pass you'll be fine. I do prefer 65 as it just seems like a more pleasant drive to me.

Avoid Atlanta during anything close to rush hour, take 285 west from 75 then pick 75 back up on the south side.

Monteagle is not really that big a deal. Put her down one gear and enjoy the view going down.
We just did in April. I had to actually use the brakes on time, going both ways. Truck held it to close to 45 which made a nice ride down.
Atlanta is fun no matter what time of day you get there, LOL
DO take the west bound bypass otherwise you go through what they call "spaghetti junction" on the east side. Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
I have gone down town and taken the by pass. Downtown you have to be a little more on your game with what lane to be in, but neither way is bad.
We spent 5 nights at FW in April, ENJOY!!!

Nashville traffic is much worse than Louisville. Most of I65 south of Indy to the border is in terrible shape and about the first 30 minutes into Kentucky isn't is good shape either. Get ready for a bumpy ride.

X4 on Atlanta. Just did a trip from Jax Fl to Atlanta (Stone mtn, then to Chattanooga, and back home to Jax. I 75 is the best route- 3 lanes on both sides, but Atlanta was horrible. Sitting dead stop in traffic often, try to avoid there anywhere near rush hour, as stated above. &5 to 10, 10 to Jax, take I 295 toward the Airport way for the least traffic thru Jax, I 95 S to Daytona, all 3 lanes as well, after Daytona I 4 is under construction from Daytona to just before Orange City- 2 lanes and temporary paved roadway. Orlando is pretty bad during rush hour, too. After that, it's 3 lanes per side all the way to Kissimmee Fl., your destination. Hope this helps you, Randy

Yea, Atlanta wasn't mentioned since there's not any choice. I've been told it's bad even at 3:00AM.

Used to make the trip all the time as a kid, but I never paid attention. Once we hit Chatanugga, I was looking at the railroad scene. It's a good haul no matter what. We're shooting for the KOA in Forsyth as our overnight stop.

It depends on the day and time you go through Atlanta. I always go straight through downtown (staying in the middle lane) as long as it is between 10 am and 2 pm. After or before that, use I-285 west. Also, make sure you go to I - 475 as you get close to Macon. Have a fun trip and good luck!

We use KOA in Forsythe also as a stopover...I always reserve a pull through site in the back because all the sites in the front are mostly uneven but very shady.

I did your first proposed route 3 years ago with no issues. Was there a serious grade (mountain) somewhere that i missed? I do remember one hill that was pretty long, but not bad. Also we stayed overnite at Stone Mountain. Glad i went out if the way a bit. It was a perfect afternoon/overnite stop.

Also i didn't think friday afternoon rush hour in Atlanta was that bad! Sure there was some stop and go, but i've seen and been in much worse!

Should have been 285 east to hwy 78 east to hit stone mtn. Then back to 285 south to 675 south with merges with 75 south.

I make that drive a few times a week.

I live 25 miles n of city center Atlanta. After 10am you can use any route you choose through Atlanta and generally be just fine. Returning from FL, do the reverse plan. Stay away from 4 to 7pm and no issues. ( barring accidents ). Pick a lane like 2nd from right and just cruise along. Recently returned from FW and we are booked there for Christmas week. Advice: practice: practice backing. Spots are tight to get into and unforgiving on errors. ( lots of trees and FIXED trash receptacles). One of the few places I move my slider hitch back. We have a 2015 Silverback 33rl and formerly had a 2011 Keystone Sydney Outback 36 ft 'er 5 er! Retired. Been x country with the Keystone. Disney is the tightest place we have experienced . Nothing practice and a good spotter cannot easily cure .

Last trip there, guy backed his 31 ft TT in and crushed his tailgate and bumper in a massive V. Just say 'n!

No kidding about it being tight. Lots of landscaping to work around, not quite enough angle on the sites and normal width roads means two spotters are paramount.

I've found if you reserve the premium sites @ FW, they are wider slots...thus less obstructions to maneuver around but the roads are all narrow inside the loops

I went from Indy to Jacksonville, Fl in early May this year. I used I65 without problems. There is construction in the Lousiville area, but it wasn't anything that stood out for me. We went through Lousivlle about 9 am on a Wed.

Unless your pulling more than you should be there is nothing in the way of grades to worry about on either route.

I'm not concerned about Monteagle. Going up let the computer and horsepower make decisions. Going down I'll drop a gear or two and enjoy the view. My true challenge will be Atlanta, but it is what it is. I'll make it.

We have a premium site, but I'm used to Lake Rudolph in Santa Claus, so tight backing can be handled.

My other true challenge will be sitting in a car for so long.

We went through Atlanta last month on a Friday afternoon about 1:00PM and it was smooth sailing on I-75 all the way through town. I get in the 2nd lane from the right a little north of town and only time I move is after the interstate merges. When it merges I move 1 lane to the left.
