info for Fl to New Orleans trip
In planning stage for our first "we'll be back when we get back" trip (as opposed to get back for work). Looking for advice on the leg from somewhere in Florida to New Orleans presumable via 10, some time in late Jan. All advice on routes, places to stay, things to do, side trips, ect, welcome. If we get side tracked and decide to head back to NYC before we get to New Orleans, there's always next trip.

Truth be told, January can be tricky. I left Lafayette, LA with the expectation that I could find an overnight stop between there and Lake City, FL. The reviews on most places weren't good. The Camping World in Tallahassee no longer allows people to stay overnight in their empty service spots. We hit a RV park or two late and they were full-up.
In Florida, I stayed at a place called Oaks N Pines in Lake City (I think). It's near the junction of 75 and 10. I'd go back there- pretty quiet and laid back.
Out the panhandle, I have reservations for a beach-front site at Camp Gulf.
There is also a Harvest Host location or two through there. One is a gator farm in Mississippi.

I live not to far from NOLA. My trips to the city do not include my TT.
That being said, I did receive a tip from a local about an RV park near the city off of I-10 near "the high rise" ( a large overpass over the MS river). Pontchartrain Landing - Waterfront RV Park and Campground, Marina, Boat Launch
This park was highly recommended and I was told that they offer a shuttle bus to the French Quarter for free several times a day. That could be very convenient because as with any large city, parking is always elusive and expensive.
The city offers many choices of sites, sounds and of course food. Depending on your stay duration, the upcoming "Carnival Season" aka Mardi Gras is something you may want to experience. I thought people knew how to party where I came from, boy was I wrong. Quite a "festive" display to say the least.
The French Quarter probably stands as one of the most recognizable tourist attractions, but other areas to visit would be the Garden District, St. Charles, the Riverwalk Mall, Fulton Street (behind Harrah's Casino)and Frenchmen Street (a smaller version of the quarter with several restaurants and live entertainment venues). There is a steamboat ride attraction and horse drawn carriages both in the French quarter. The carriage ride (depending on your guide) is informative about the history of streets and buildings around the quarter.
And there is a very well done WWII museum to visit. Not cheap but very impressive.
Public transportation is excellent using the trolley cars. Very reasonable rates and they travel to all the locations listed above.
NOLA is not immune from the criminal element. I recommend doing most
of your sight seeing during daylight hours. Nighttime is safe as well to a certain extent. Honestly I have had no problems in the early evening in the quarter and other locations. Most of the problems we hear about on the local news involve events that occur very late at night usually after midnight. Just be careful. A "watch those that are watching you" kind of thing.
Hope this helps......

I'm planning a big detour to NO in March on the way home to NC from FL. This one does sound interesting! The unsavory element is well known in NO and a little extra caution is required. I'm always aware of our surroundings, rarely out late, and my friend Mr. Colt is always at my side. Thanks as this may be the CG for our stay! Especially interesting as fishing is on the agenda whenever possible too.

CaptJohn,
Careful with that firearm. There is a ban on guns in the French Quarter being considered since most of the notable multiple shootings have occurred there as of late. You may be better off with a fake wallet with a few old expired credit cards and a quick exit from the perpetrators. Nobody said these guy's are smart!

St. Joes and St. George Island State Parks in the panhandle of Florida are both nice camping spots. You may or may not be able to get a reservation this late, but stopping in to see if there are open spots or cancellations might work for you. The drive across the panhandle is pretty, but it is a two lane road. Panama City and Pensacola are two cities that may have some things for you to see and do. Apalachicola is a pretty little town along the water. They have shops and restaurants and the surrounding area to walk around. Many folks winter in the panhandle, so most RV resorts are probably already full, but you could try to see if any have openings for the nights you plan to be in the area.

We will be arriving in NO on the 27 of Jan. then traveling to Winter Heaven FL on the 30. Staying at the NO West KOA (by the Airport). A good local eatery down the road is The River Shack Tavern at 3449 River Road. It has a colorful past and is a local spot for great food and entertainment. This is one of those places that is not on the average travelers radar.

Thanks to all who are suggesting nightly stay over spots between NO and FL, I am making a list.

A pretty nice route would be along Rt 98 thru the Panhandle of Florida . Right along the Gulf . Fishing , birding , biking , hiking . Lots of mom and pop campgrounds , each one unique [ maybe weird ]. Plenty safe .
All state parks are nice and may have one nite stays available .
Often overlooked campgrounds would include , the city campground in Sopchoppy , Spring Creek fish camp below Tallahassee [ right on the water , Mexico has a passport campground . I travel this route continuously and never stay in name brand campgrounds [ cookie cutter campgrounds .
If ya get caught with out a campground just travel north up to route 20 and dry camp in just about any small town . I very seldom travel the interstate [ no hurry ] , we look for adventure and help keep the south safe from dem darn Yankees !

New Orleans stops
Foley, AL, is slways a good mid point. Several nice RV parks but with the snowbirds already there, you need to book early. In New Orleans,, FrenchWuarter RV park is mice and Ponstrain Land to. Pontrain Landing can be dusty or muddy but they have good food and entertainment. Good luck.

NOLA
Did a trip from central Florida to Nola last spring and had a ball. It was tied in with some other travel, so we stayed a couple nights in Pensacola Fl ( I think the park was called Pensacola RV and was nice and also close to I10)
In Nola we stayed at Ponchatrain Landing (based on someones recommendation here) and it was a great place to stay. Kind of in a weird industrial area with some commercial marine traffic, but the park was nice and included a restaurant/nightclub on site. There is a shuttle to the French quarter several times a day that I think cost 10 bucks (well worth it). A few times we drove into town an I parked at Harrah's casino.
One of the things we enjoyed the most was a place called Mardi Gras World> it's kind of a museum, kind of a warehouse where they store and build many of the floats, and you can actually watch them being built.
We are anxious to go back and will do so soon. Beignets and coffee at Cafe du Monde and Muffuletta at Central grocery
