Kane PA

On the way to Red Bridge NP campground we drive through Kane, PA.

Whats with all the white stripes painted across the roads? This was the first time we’ve seen such a thing.

They didn’t correlate with stop signs, traffic lights, no parking signs, or snow emergency signs. Were baffled.

Any ideas?

No idea what it means in that town, but we have seen white stripes painted across the roads in small towns. It's usually a visual clue to get you to slow down. We've seen them in shopping areas, near emergency buildings and occasionally temporarily put down for a special event.

What you are seeing are VASCAR markers. They are used by the police to time how long it takes for you to get from one line to the other to calculate your speed. They are ubiquitous in PA.

EDIT: A more PA-specific bit of information:

There is one PD in Delaware County that sets up speed traps throughout their town. Often sitting outside their town limits waiting for violators.

They park on the shoulder of a highway at night, around a bend with lights out. Very dangerous.

They also park on a highway between north and south lanes no lights at night.

I wouldn't trust them with radar.

Are these narrow stripes the width of lane dividing lines?
If so these are speed trap markers to time traffic.

But there are several places around PA with very wide diagonal lines. These are paint test strips. Usually half a dozen or more with each stripe a different paint to see how well it holds up to traffic wear.

BTW, PA passed a law allowing municipalities to use radar. Expect a lot of new speed traps as local cops play with their new toys.
