Closest public resort I'm aware of:

SUGARLOAF KEY / KEY WEST KOA
Open All Year
Reserve: 800-562-7731
Info: 305-745-3549
Email
251 State Road 939
Sugarloaf Key, FL 33042-0469
Get Directions
Camper Rating 4.5 out of 5

Didn't stay, but looked at it ($$$$) and it looks pretty good. Reserve well in advance. Short drive to KW. Great Kayaking, fishing bicycling and hiking. Away from the madnesses of Key West, but good to visit to study The Conch Culture.

The only one I've been to this past summer is Boyd's. Found it very nice and clean and close to downtown. If you don't want to use your toad there's a bus that stops outside the entrance that goes downtown.

Agree Boyd's is nice and closest to the activities . Sites are tight but so are most on the Keys. Parking is a problem on key west. At least at Boyds you can use the bus( city has a site to see bus location live on your smart phone), call a cab ( $20-22) to take you to Duval street, or drive your toad and pay to park. No campground is in walking distance. You cannot park your Rv anywhere downtown and I have never found a lot that will take an Rv ( and we are only 25 ft) The only way to bring an Rv near the tourist part of the island is to park at fort Zachary Taylor and walk into town.

It doesn't get nicer than Bluewater Key. The price is crazy expensive, though.

Here's the site we're headed to in a couple of weeks:
Lot #37 Tropical Platinum Plus

And here are my photos from my last stay:

RE

There's no Enterprise car rental except at the airport and I don't think they have pickup service. So without a toad you either need to use the bus or heard some state they rode a bike from Boyd's to Duval St.

We stayed a Sugarloaf and enjoyed it. Nice pool, bar etc. Close to Key West. We got out of there just before NYE and I'd avoid it around that time, full of drunks.

Stayed at Boyd's last winter. Bus stop out front makes life really easy. If you've got a bigger rig things will be tight at Boyd's but it's clean, quiet and has security.

We just stayed at Boyd's Key West. Was very crowded at first for Power Boat races. Emptied out and was quiet for the remainder of our 10 days. Yes, very tight sites to get in. Not particularly the type of back to back sites we like to camp, but given the size of the island understandable. Blue Water Key looks very nice, only 10 miles father from Key West.

My wife is now at me to spend a couple of months there... my budget sure won't like it!

My wife and I have stayed at Boyd's the last 2 years, and Geiger Key this January. Love Boyd's. You can rent a scooter as the roads between Boyd's and Downtown Key West have slow speeds and you can putt along and get free parking.

Scoot' n is FUN; no question. There are enough "in a hurry" idiots to add stress. FREE PARKING is questionable 😖. I got a ticket on the scooter where parking was allowed but we missed the cut time by 5 minutes! ( no meter ) We spent 2 hours trying to pay. ( successful ). Just say'n; watch your timing very carefully and read all signs posted. Easy to get distracted while enjoying the area.

You can take a bus right outside the gate at Boyd's to Duval st. or if you have a handicap parking pass always find a spot a block or 2 from Duval St.
