Key West in October

Planning to visit KW in mid-October. I've heard the campgrounds need very early reservations in the Winter. Does anyone know if that's necessary in Oct?

Thanks

Key West in October

Iíve called a couple of places. A few
Consider Oct 1 the start of their Prime season (and adjust rates accordingly).

Iím guessing things will fill up for Fantasy Fest.

Thanks for the response. I'll need to check the schedule for the festival.

Rates really jump up in December, October you may be ahead of the crowd a bit.

I often rent a 2 BR condo in Marathon in late October for a week or so... the rate I get is comparable to a private campground. I often see open spots in Sunshine Key RV Resort between Marathon and Big Pine. A camground that I have heard of but never checked out is Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge... I understand that there is a campground there besides the Lodge. I gave up trying to get into a state campground in the keys years ago for any stay more then a night or two. October weather there is great and attractions are not yet very crowded.

Good Luck

Yes, Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge took a hard hit from Irma but is up and running. We checked it out on our way a little further west of there in March. If you bring a dog with you, you won't be able to stay there - the Key Deer live on the island and are protected. You could also try Bahia Honda as well. If you're planning to be there for Fantasy Fest, by now I'm betting most campgrounds are already booked up. HTH

Lived in the Keys for 24 years, October is one of the slowest months, You might also check out Marathon. There is so much to see and do on many of the Low.er Keys

Key West

I have been camping in Key West during the winter for the last twelve years. Try Leoís campground. Tell Nikole Bruce sent you. Marathon is an hour away from Key West. Nice place but not as much fun as Key West.

We just got back from the Keys, Curry-Hammock is a super nice park if you can get in. I heard from a ranger that Long Key State Park Campground will be opening back up soon, the hurricane wiped it out.

Thanks. I've seen some reviews saying Leo's has quite tight turns and narrow sites. I've got a 29 ft fiver and prefer a pull through. Your thoughts?

Fantasy Fest Key West is October 18 - 27. I'm sure it will fill up fast unless already full. All the color and excitement will be in old key west for Fantasy Fest. It is like a Key West Mardi Gras! Go online and look at past Fantasy Fest pictures. The body art is amazing. It is fun for watching and participating if you're so inclined!

Adam mentioned Curry Hammock as a place to stay. Nice place! Not many sites, but it's right on the Atlantic. It's a short drive from Grassy Key RV and the Jolly Roger; we've stayed at both. We prefer Grassy Key but that's just us. Grassy Key is smaller than the Jolly Roger.... there is no bath house or or dump station at Grassy Key, but every site has full hookups. Very clean and well kept.

Definitely fills up for Fantasy Fest. Renting a room costs hundreds a night. RV and tent sites have been sold out for months.

We spend every Thanksgiving in the keys & this year we return to Venture out Resort on Cudjoe Key (caught our limit of snapper from the campsite)... my profile pic was taken there a few years ago. Sites can be right on the seawall. Great dining around the area (Bucktooth rooster, Square Grouper) and a short ride to Key West.

... OK, now I have to find pics to post from each year there (ocean front for all but one):

First Jolly Roger on Marathon
Next year Venture out on Cudjoe
Then Geiger Key
On to the State Parks to save some cash - at John Pennekamp next followed by Curry Hammock.
Glad for our state park system ...off to the springs next week ....

Any chance you are retired military or retired DoD civilian?

If so - then on Key West - the Navy Base Key West has a large RV facility. (Actually - 2 facilities). At the main site - they have 200 sites without hookups, and 100 sites with hookups. (Hookup sites are for 2 weeks - and rotate out to permit others to have hookups...based on a waiting list.

They have a secondary site that is closer to downtown Key West (8 - 10 minute bike ride) - and it has 300 sites - no hookups.
(No hookups - but there are water hydrants close to all sites - to fill tanks - but the hoses can't be left hooked up. AND - they have sewage disposal at both main and secondary - so you can use a portable tank - or take your RV to the dump site.)

Costs are extremely 'affordable' ...Rates in 2017 were $14/night for no hookups and $17/night for full hookups.

We visit Big Pine Key Fishing lodge every year while we snowbird in West Palm Beach. We drive down there to visit our cousin who snowbirds there every winter, we stay in the hotel room. They had a lot of damage from Hurricane Irma, like a lot of the campgrounds down there. Some campgrounds are gone! BPK is a great place, but all their rental units are GONE!! Because of the remodeling, the prices have gone sky high, cousin pays close to 2000 a month
