KY/TN campground suggestions for newbie

We are newly RV-ers and trying to learn the ropes. Recently purchased a 2000 Reflection. We want to do some short term traceling, we love in the East end of KY/TN. Any suggestions?

Live in Kentucky so know more there but have been to some in Tennessee. Not too far from you:

Tennesee:
* Warriors Path State Park
* Bandy Creek in Big South Fork
* Fall Creek Falls State Park

Kentucky:
* Breaks Interstate Park (Virginia and Kentucky)
* Cumberland Gap National Park (actually in Virginia) (haven't camped there yet but driven through)
* Carr Creek State Park
* Blue Heron in Big South Fork

As you can see we prefer State/National /NFS/COE parks over private ones.

Welcome to FRF Tim!!

David covered a lot of great places to camp and hike. We've been to nearly all of them and would go back to any of them.
A quick peek at google maps looks like Morristown is about midway between Big south Fork area and Smokies
So.....
We also recommend Shenandoah National Park and I like to tell folks about Pisgah National Forest. It has great mountains, water falls and hiking and camping AND less crowds than the Smokies typically have.

We see you have an 18 yr old trailer?
or is that the model #? You might try camping at home or very close to home the 1st time just to see what you know and what you don't know and what you need...
I like to tell folks one of the most important things you can get as a new camper is a note pad and pencil. Every time you think "I need this or that" write it down!
(I guess people do that on their phones now days.....)

Anyway- Welcome to FRF!!
Don't be afraid to ask questions!!

Whispering Hills RV Park

When we go to Lexington, we like to stay at Whispering Hills RV Park. It's clean and employees are very friendly and helpful.

COE Campgrounds

Go online and check out the Corp of Engineering campgrounds. They are nice and have nice bath houses. Located near lakes and rivers, many times below dams. We also like state parks over private campgrounds. Enjoy your camper.

Harrison Bay SP

We spent a week at Harrison Bay SP near Chattanooga and loved it. On the Tennessee River, close to Civil War sites, easy access to other day trips.

Go on line to rv reviews, type in state and city and form your own opinions about what you read and others say.

Hey there from Southwest Virginia. We are neighbors.

You were given some great suggestions above. We really like the Breaks Interstate Park (has FHU in a few sites), Cumberland Gap NP has limited services and I will add Natural Tunnel SP in Virginia, which has water/electric.

We really like Panther Creek and Douglas Dam Headwater Campground. We have looked at the Tailwater, but like Headwater, so that's where we usually stay. We aren't fond of Warrior's because I feel like I am sitting in the middle of the road. We have also gone to Lazy Llama campground in Chuckey and really enjoyed it. Our daughters did Llama Art Camp last summer and had a blast.

We have a local camping club that encompasses the NE TN, Eastern Ky and SW Virginia areas. We are on Facebook. Look us up and join in. We have a couple of campouts each year and have a great time, great food and really good company. We are having a Thanksgiving trip to Natural Tunnel. Several of us will be there for the entire week. If you are game and enjoy colder temps, plan to join us.

Diamond Caverns RV Resort - bear Mammoth Cave
We stayed here with our Thousand Trails Membership twice now- both at the fringes of the season. We liked it- simple park and our spots were decent. Haven’t used the pool. But when we had a group of 6-7 families, they let us use one of the buildings for a potluck breakfast.

Dumplin Valley Farm RV Park, Seiverville, TN
We spent a few nights just passing through. But I’d gladly go back to explore Pigeon Forge area. Pretty wide open and apparently has a huge bluegrass festival each year

Two Rivers RV Resort, Sevierville, TN
This was a weird RV spark situated in what appears to be a long block of a future business park (though, in 6 years- nothing has been built). Prime and proper- very Resort-like feeling. Sites are a little tight for folks with slides.

Montgomery Bell State Park, Dickson, TN
The non-sewer sites are definitely nicer than the sewer sites. We are backed up to a creek and are in a beautiful wooded setting.

One of the nicest places you will ever find is Elkmont in the smokies. This is dry camping with no power.

we stayed out at Greenbrier Campground outside Gatlinburg, Tn back in late August. Great, nice place of about 100 sites for all sizes of units, backins and pull throughs. The campsite is surrounded by the Little Pigeon River, which you can swim in, they have no pool. Only about 4 miles outside Gatlinburg and all spaces are very shady, all with full hookups. if you desire cable, bring your own coax to hookup, or they even sell them in the store/ office when you check in. Very nice bath houses, laundry room and game room for the kids. we'll be going back next spring/summer, as we only stayed a week we couldn't catch all there is to do is Gatlinburg, and you're right at the entrance to the Smoky Mountain National Park or a short drive to Pigeon Forge.

A great place to stay when checking out the Bourbon Trail and Lexington is the heart of horse country
