Here are the campgrounds we went to in Acadia, and my personal opinion:
Bar Harbor Campground: First arrived, first served. They don't take reservations, and you have to pay cash (they have an ATM machine). It's a nice campground, but it's always risky when you can't reserve.....Last time we went there, they were no sites available.
Smuggler's Den Campground: Located in Southwest Harbor (very close to Acadia NP). Sites are nice, full services, playground, hiking trails etc etc
Schoodic Woods Campground ( Located in Winter Harbor). Even tough the campground is part of Acadia National Park, it is not situated on the main land. it's an hour drive to the park, but there's a passenger ferry that can bring you to Bar Harbor, which is in Acadia NP. I must say, that campground is a gem.......hard to find a campground as beautiful as Schoodic Woods. Sites have water electricity only, and there are no showers. (good to know). This summer will be our third time there.
All three of these campgrounds have free shuttles to the park, and they run all day long. (complimentary of L.L. Bean).
Welcome to Vacationland
