Avoid 151

64 to 29 would be best. 151 has a lot of hills and curves, and a few switchbacks crossing the mountain.

Or you could take 151 to 6 to 29. It’s a good cutover shortcut without going all the way to 29 on 64. Avoids the mountain switchbacks.

Be careful while you are transitioning from 29 to I40 then to I73, that area is always under construction and all those highways merge into I 40 at the same place. Very dangerous area. In fact when heading west I always avoid that area of Greensboro. Try to plan your trip so you are going through that area at a non peak time.

Your assessment has been correct in the past, I40, I85, US29 junction known locally as Death Valley, however going south, you now exit 29 before Greensboro and smoothly cruise right from 73 to 220 to US 1, bypassing I40.
