Michigan to Gettysburg

We are pulling our 31 foot fifth wheel from Auburn Hills Michigan to Gettysburg. We have been out of state before but have never gone through mountains. What would be the easier route to take ? We don’t care if it’s more expensive because of tolls/etc. my husband has been pulling a fifth wheel for almost 8 years now , he’s just a little anxious doing these mountains. Any info on routes would be helpful. Thx so much ! Kathy

90/80 to 76 thru Pittsburg to Gettysburg.
Just did the trip 2 summers ago from Philly to the UP and back. No issues and I have a 33' bumper pull and a Tundra. The mountains out here are nothing like out west....they're more like big hills.

With a 31 ft 5th wheel I wouldn't be concerned but in western PA Rte 80 definitely has some pretty big hills.

Take 80 East thru Ohio then cut down Rte 76 towards Pittsburg then over 76 until Harrisburg then down Rte 15 to Gettysburg.

That way you avoid the bigger hills in PA.

We took our 26' motorhome to The Grand Canyon of PA, Ricketts Glen State Park, Gettysburg. The major tollways are not bad, the back roads can be hairy. I would use a RV Specific GPS, I used Google Maps and was on a lot of 10 ton limit roads which had many twists, turns and steep grades. Google will give you the shortest route, but not always what you want to drive.

We stayed in Artillery Ridge Campground, very convenient to Gettysburg, lots of pull through sites. We did a guided bicycle tour of the battlefield, 12 miles of biking over 3+ hours (mostly easy, you need to be confident at biking, but not in great shape), a great way to see the park.

I will check out the GPS. We have reservations at Little Drummer Boy with a pull through site. Anxious to go ! Ty for the info.

Make sure you check out Mister Ed's Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium. It's only 15 miles from Gettysburg right down RT 30.
Hanover, PA is also in the area (think Snyder's Pretzels).
Caledonia State Park or Pine Grove State Park is also worth a quick visit while in that area.
I went to school at Monte Alto (PSU). Born and raised near Harrisburg.

Make sure you check the open days.
If you want some down home, PA Dutch, great food, great butchers, and just good food, you gotta go there!

You will not regret it if you want to try some south/central PA grub! The place is HUGE!

I have the TruckMap app on my phone, it takes you 80->76-> 15 -> Gettysburg (looks better than the route I took )
We also stopped into the Civil War museum in Harrisburg, PA, if you have 2 hours, well worth the time but 30% redundant to the museum/movie in Gettysburg

We attended the Gettysburg Frog Rally a couple years ago. I live pretty close to you...
My route: 23 south to I-80. Turnpike east to Akron, get off on Ohio 8. OH 8 to I-77. I-77 to Cleveland Rd (Ohio 800). Ohio 800 to Ohio 212, we spent a couple nights at Atwood Lake Campground (a really nice cg). Then back to Ohio 212. Continued south going thru Cadiz and got on US 250. Continue SE to Wheeling WV and get on I-470 to I-70. I-70 to I-79. I-79 to Pen 21 (near Franklin Twp.). East on P-21 to US-40. At Addison, we got off on PA-523 and spent another couple of nights at Outflow Campground (a US Army Corp of Engineers park). Back to US-40 then onto i-68. I-69 to I-70. I-70 to I-81. Then PA-16 into Gettysburg. After the rally, we continued east and visited Delaware...



On our way home, we went express: I-70 to I-80 back to US 23. (I try to avoid I-75 in Mich south of Detroit as much as possible.

bear in mind that 76 is a toll road
you might want to take 80 east into PA as far as practical and then drop south to G-burg.

I-76 is a toll road (PA Turnpike) but for those with towing concerns, it is still the best route as there are tunnels and huge cuts in the mountains to lessen the grades.

I live right atop the Allegheny Mountains in Western PA and I will tell you to stay off Route 30 between New Stanton and Willow Hill. The T-Pike is best through here.

I-80 takes you pretty far north to go to the southern part of PA but the road isn't as hilly. I-68 in MD is OK too but also a little farther south.

We often take the turnpike to Willow Hill exit, go south on Route 75 to Route 30 east in Fort Loudon and then east into Gettysburg. Fort Loudon is the end of the mountainous roads going east on Route 30. It's mostly flat from there and that's a beautiful part of PA for sure.

You can go slightly farther on the turnpike and then come directly south into Gettysburg if you so desire as well.

I can attest that 30, just west of Fort Loudon, has a hellacious grade. I had to bring my camper down it in the snow once during deer season. I'll be happy never to have to do that again.
