One of the best that I've been in. I've been trying my best the last few years to stay only in State and County parks and have found that they provide the best experience for the buck. Most are around $30 a night which greatly offsets the cost of fuel to get there.

I was stationed in myrtle beach in the early 80s. If you fish. Get some minnows and a bobber and you can catch 5lb largemouth and flounder in those inlets at pirate land campground. I use to go every day in way home from work. Wife not happy. Lol. All the water is brackish.

Highly DO NOT recommend Pirate Land. Especially when Lake Wood and Ocean Lakes are nearby. If you want less crowds, check out Myrtle Beach State Park. I couldn't imagine going from Outer Banks to Pirate Land. People are nice, but you camp on grass right on top of one another. There is a sign warning you to stay out of the ocean during high tides due to toxic water from the nearby drainage.
Myrtle Beach Travel Park is in North Myrtle, and very nice as well. All campgrounds in Myrtle are going to be crowded in the summer. We only hit up Myrtle in the spring and fall.
Seriously though, if you can get your money back and reserve at one of the other places I mentioned, I'd do it.

Edisto and Hunting Island are nice... in the spring and fall. Mosquitoes and gnats are horrible at the southern SC beach campgrounds after April. James Island is nice in Charleston. Your best bet is Ocean Lakes, Lake Wood, etc.
My favorite is Willow Tree RV Resort in Longs, SC. It's 10 miles from the beach, which I was concerned about. But once there, I didn't want to go to the ocean. Spent all my time in the crystal clear spring fed 35 acre lake. Can't wait to go back, place is manicured like Augusta National Gold Club.

But as far as the original question. Although I prefer NC beaches, SC has the better beach front campgrounds.

Yea we visited Pirate Land and decided against them. Nice looking park but very crowded. I like to take my motorcycle to ride while at the beach, but they don't allow motorcycles. If you bring it they will let you park it in a lot outside the entrance. They also don't allow golf carts but you can rent theirs, go figure. So we stay at Apache. Smaller older campground but we like it. Plus they have their own pier with entertainment. Close to places that we can ride our golf cart like Walmart etc. This is our adult only trip so we don't need the water park for the kids.

Holiday Trav-L-park is located in Emerald Isle, NC. We (I live in the same county) are considered the Southern Outerbanks. I have not personally camped there, but was just talking to a friend a couple of weeks ago who has parked there in their Class A and they said it was a very nice, clean and well managed park. Well, we booked our reservations at PirateLand and plan on keeping them. We're gonna do the Rock Star tour and hit 10 campgrounds in a month. We'll be there for 4 days and if it blows, I'll scratch PirateLand off my list.

We just came back from Camp Hatteras.
Hard to tell from pictures and web sites, but it is far supperior (IMHO) to KOA. Koa is going through a lot of construcion right now, noise, power on and off etc (So we were told by guests staying there at the time). Camp hatteras is great. waves is nice but lots are small. Camp hatteras ocean side, we stayed just facing the dunes. We cpuld see the ocean from our window. Too bad the weather wasn't too good. We got there just in time for a Nor'easter. What an adventure!!

We've stayed at both Waves (2011) and Camp Hatteras (2012). For the area, Waves is a lot less expensive, but sites a small as others have mentioned. Camp Hatteras is more expensive, but much larger with an ocean side and a sound side. We use our Coast to Coast to stay at Hatteras for $10 per night, and we're going back in June.
