We leave South Jersey at 6pm and head up 87 to 90. Spend the night and head across 90 until we hit 95.

What bridge do you use? The GWB?

I would go the tappan zee bridge. Wave as you go through Worcester mass I am just south of the pike(90). Depending on what time you come through I would suggest taking 290 east through Worcester to 495 north and avoid 95 mornings and afternoons. Pike from Worcester to 95 during rush hour can be ssslllooowww as well as 95 north
Check your route on a gps trip planner and update as you go.

Use the Tappan Zee. I believe you are limited to upper deck only on GWB. GWB traffic is brutal on a good day.

Stay away from GWB. Look at 87-84-90-495-95. Watch bridges & overpasses lots of POT HOLES. We did this route last Aug, to go to Maine.

GWB is going to take you into the belly of the beast. Lots of traffic most hours of the day and the roads in and around the bridge are very narrow. I would avoid it unless you are traveling during off hours. When I say off hours I mean after 10 PM and before 6 AM. You’d probably be better going further north and cross over on the Tapanzee Bridge. It’s not as direct of a route but you’ll be avoiding NYC totally, it will be less stressful and if you were to encounter traffic on the GWB it could delay you 1/2 hour easily.

287 to 87 no bridge needed.

You probably can get to the mass pike without a bridge, I’m not 100% sure on that, but it will add time to the trip...if you’re coming up the Jersey tpke use the tappan zee for sure. There is a few ways to get to it and you can make a “game time decision “ based on traffic. Once over the bridge get on 684N (exit 10 I believe) and take that to 84 east ...exit 2 in CT has a nice RV friendly rest stop....84 will run you through CT and up to 90 mass pike. From there as stated above ...495-95 ...not a bad ride , CT gets bogged down with traffic in Waterbury and Hartford at rush hour times.

When I went from Jersey to Kennebunkport I went this way:

TZ bridge to 287 to 684 to 84 just west of Danbury to Sturbridge Mass TPK to 290 to 495( left exit off 290..there are warning signs) to 95.

Continue on MassTPK to 495 if you want. Its got no advantage save it leaves you less money.

You sure can avoid the metro NYC bridges by taking the Garden State Parkway to end to 287 west to NY State Thruway (87 North) and just below Albany NY you can pick up Mass Pike 90. Problem is it’s going to take you too far west and probably add at least an hour and a half to your trip.

There are parts of the GSP above exit 105 where underpass are less than 12 foot. Attached is an article from a few years back.

I have just emailed New Jersey Garden State Parkway authorities. As they’re the ones that told me that the entire Parkway is open to all RV travel. I specifically gave them my height of 13‘6“ this time. I will post their response.

Post 13 is correct, if your higher then 12' stay in the center lane. The right and left lanes are 12' or less.
No tractor trailers are permitted on the GSP in the North.

GSP will be a white knuckle ride during daylight hours, take 287 its a more scenic ride in Northern NJ.

Thanks for everyone’s input. GSP authority states the max height of their overpasses is 13’6”. My 5er is 13’4”. So for us it’s the scenic route 287

I know I'm late to this thread but when I travel from MA south, I use this route in reverse (495 to 90 to 84 to 87) to avoid the major metropolitan NY area. Of course I return on the same route.

If you use this route, you will cross the Hudson River on the Hamilton Fish Newburgh – Beacon Bridge (I'm pretty sure that's the name). I'm not exactly sure of the height, but the attached photo taken from Google Maps shows that big rigs cross with no issues.
