North Carolina... Suggestions?

Planning a trip to NC this summer. Have a place to stay for a couple weeks in the western part of the state.

Looking for any suggestions for "cool" things to do-go-see...?

Love anything outdoors or on water. Also, taking our Lab with us but he would also be OK for a 1/2 day alone in camp (pvt property).

Not sure how "Western" in NC is.....but if you are going to the Charlotte area.....We spent a week at Cane Creek Campground last Oct and we loved it.

County owned and operated and very clean and quiet.

We did all of the NASCAR sightseeing things and would go back for sure.

Shhhh cane creek is supposed to be a local secret. All you tourists are taking my spots 😃.

As for Western Carolina what amenities are you looking for? If full hookups, one of my fav campgrounds is Hot Springs Spa and resort. Right on French broad River and with 1/2 -3/4 mile of river front. You can walk to one end launch you tubes and get out at other. Large sites had my 37' trailer and tundra, a friends F150 and a 8x8 tent in tent in the pull through lane, so my site was at least 85'. Did i mention Appalachian trail across the river?

If full hookups are not required, lots of great campgrounds in the Smoky Mountain National Park.

There are a ton of campgrounds in Cherokee, NC as well

Check out RV Park Reviews :: Home

Great place for reviews on campgrounds, from people that have been there. We stay at Tumbling waters, near Fontana Dam, highest dam in the east. Franklin is a couple hours away, and so is Asheville. About 100 miles just between those to towns. And none of the roads up there are straight, or fast.

It sounds as if you already have the place to stay, and are looking for attractions.

If you're in the Asheville area, by all means visit Biltmore Estate, the largest private home ever built in North America. Take time for the winery and the farm as well as touring the mansion.

If you're a fan of Billy Graham, stop by The Cove, just an exit east of Biltmore.

Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are near Asheville. If you go with your RV, do not take the road directly from Asheville. I did that, and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy (but if he had an RV, then I might. Take I-26 east to the Bat Cave exit and go north from there.

Spend some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and go south to Cherokee and through the Great Smokies National Park. Get a Parkway directory, or check it out on America's Byways®: National Scenic Byways Online to get information about some of the attractions there, like Grandfather Mountain, Lynn Cove Viaduct, Linville Falls, and more.

Have a great time.

Was just in Franklin NC last September. Nice pretty scenery. Here are a few things we did or saw being done while we were there.

Wayah Ranger Tower
West of Franklin

Water Rafting
Nantahala

Smokey Mountain Railroad
Bryson City

Casino
Cherokee

Great Smokey Mountain National Park
Cherokee

Blue Ridge Scenic Byway

Water Falls and Shopping
Highlands

Gem Mining- It was interesting and fun
Franklin Area

Dairy Queen

Just day trips around the back roads checking out the views

Rock musuem
Franklin

Walking and Biking Trail
Franklin

That is most of what I remember of the area, just a neat part of this great country of ours.

One we really enjoyed after catching our breath was Clingmans Dome in the Great Smokey Mountains Nationa Park. A long half mile hike up to a lookout tower overlooking TN and NC.

I live here and there are a ton of things to do. If you are into the outdoors check out the websites for the Nantahala National Forest, the Pisgah National Forests and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Near Franklin on US64/NC 28 there are a ton of waterfalls. Rafting is popular along the Nantahala River. If you fish the Tuckasiegee River near Dillsboro is quite popular. If you hike head to Andrews Bald this month as the flame azaleas are spectacular. Andrews is in the national park and is off of Clingmans Dome. If you mountain bike Jack Rabbit out on Lake Chatuge and Tsali on Fontana Lake are very good cross country rides and the Pisgah is a mountain bikers dream. The Blue Ridge Parkway is loaded with long range vistas and lots of hiking opportunities. If you head to Asheville pick up the BRP at Balsam off of US 74 and.drive north. You will not regret it. I own the chocolate and coffee business in Dillsboro. Stop by and say hello.
