Orlando to Fort Myers

Heading to Orlando in February for a few weeks then on to Fort Myers. anyone have a better route than going by way of I-4 and I-75?. Interstates are so boring and traffic is bad sometimes as I experienced last year. thanks.

Take 27 south off of I4 to 29 to 80 will get you to ft Myers. First few miles of 27 south of 4 has some traffic lights and development but the rest becomes progressively rural and pleasant to drive.

Orlando to FT Myers is 27 s to 80 or 82 w. Don't know where your are coming from but from the east coast it would be 95s to A1A south to 301.

Stay off I4! Google maps is your friend.

Avoid I4 at all costs. It is a NIGHTMARE. BTDT too many times. 27 to 17 is your best bet. It's rural, easy driving. Pick up I75 south in Punta Gorda if you're headed to a CG in Ft Myers near the interstate. 82 is becoming known as 'death alley' lately. Try not to use it.

Right on FL-64 W to
Left on US-17 S to
Left on I-75 S.

Drove this way a few times in the last month. No problems.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the advice. Staying at KOA Pine Island. We drove on I-4 last year, stuck in traffic 2 hers dead stop. No fun.

What ever you do, do NOT use I-4 through Orlando. I-4 is currently under construction through Orlando and it is a nightmare. We pull a 5th wheel and I refuse to go through Orlando on I-4. There are sudden lane changes and barriers that loom very close to the edge of the outside lanes.

We live in DeLand and if we have to go to the west coast and go around Orlando, we take Fla. 417 (on the east side of Orlando) or Fla. 429 (on the west side of Orlando) and pay the tolls. Well worth not having to trade paint in downtown Orlando. If there is an accident on I-4 in Orlando, there is no real good way to avoid the traffic back-up and lane closures. You could possibly be stuck in traffic for hours.

Thanks Springerdad, will take you up on that.

Jimmy James,
Last year driving on I-4 scared me to the point my seat has permanent crease. coming from VA, planning getting on A1A to 301 before Jacksonville and coming into Orlando. went that way home last year and enjoy drive back.

You can start on 17 and can take 31 in Arcadia almost to Ft Myers. I've not driven 31 that I can recall so can't speak to RV friendliness.

Since you're headed to Pine Island, your best bet is 17 south into Punta Gorda, then on I75 south for a short hop to Tuckers Grade west to Fl41, south to Del Prado Blvd, south to Pine Island Road and go west to Pine Island. We take this route to Kissimmee frequently to go camping and have found it to be the least stressful and easier on the equipment. If you look on a map, in Punta Gorda there is Burnt Store Road, which is shorter. The road is in horrible shape - I drive it daily during the week. I won't pull my camper on it, and wouldn't tell any one else to. HTH.

Burnt Store is under construction and about 2/3 rds 4 lane divided now. It's doable if your not in a hurry.

Yeah, but the part of Burnt Store that hasn't been four laned is in really bad shape. Everything in your camper will be tossed about. Happens in my work trailer every time I drive it.
