Routes to travel around in Florida??
Headed to Florida, from NY, in a couple months. Gonna be southbound on I95 when entering Florida...Here's the question...What routes are best for my destinations and what routes should I avoid?
First stop will be in the southern Keys, then back north to Cape Canaveral, then West to Clearwater, then South to Fort Myers Beach.
Towing a rather long combination of a 42' fifth wheel and a crew cab dually 8' box.
Thanks in advance for your tips and driving expertise!

I live on Merritt Island, a stones throw from Cape Canaveral. We went to Key West in 2017. We went via I95 to I595 in Ft Lauderdale then the Ronald Reagan Turnpike to the southern end at Florida City then US1 to Key West. We returned via the same route. I wanted to avoid Miami at all costs so did not mind paying tolls to do that. From Cape Canaveral take SR 528 west toward Orlando. I take the 417 southern bypass to avoid the Orlando traffic on 528. Both ways intersect I4 going to Tampa area.

Until Florida gets the E-Zpass situation resolved, I would send for a Sunpass. Or just stop at the first CVS/Walgreens pharmacy you come to in Florida and get one ($10). You can then either call or activate it on line.
Read this and you'll know what I mean (copied from another post);

Pigpen29, you don't say how much time you have for your adventure, but by the route you have described I would guess your not in a hurry. If you are limited on time, to go all the way down to the southern keys first, then back north to the cape then south again to only go north yet again... We did something like that this past summer but that was due to an unexpected death in the family. Are you meeting people in those locations because that's when they are going to be at those stops?
If I were heading down I95 I would stop and do the Kennedy Space Center, it's right on the route then head on down the same route Windjammin described then on the way back north from the keys catch I75, across Alligator Alley to Naples & up to Ft. Myers Beach. Then back on I75 up to Clearwater. This route won't give you fits with the 5er.
Now, if it's how I'm guessing, my only suggestion is to STAY OFF I4! I4 is one of the worst roads for accidents to occur on. I would find any other SR to take from the Cape to get to Ft. Myers.
And x3 on the SunPass!

Routes to follow in.....
Yes, get the Sunpass.
Going to the Keys, get off I95 at Jupiter and follow to the end. Coming back to the Cape take 1 to the turnpike then get back on I95N and follow signs. Going to Clearwater use back roads if you have a GPS system or Googlemaps. If you have to, take I4 but construction is heavy. Take I75s to Fort Meyers.
You really want to try to avoid I95 south of Jupiter because it goes through W. Palm Beach and Ft Lauderdale. Even if you take 595 you're gonna hit more traffic then the TP. Unfortunately you're going to hit Miami and the drivers there are extremely rude and discourteous.

Heading out feb 12,13,or 14th...depending on which days weather is better. Our reservation for the keys starts 2/18. We are then at each of the listed locations for 2 weeks each. We wanted to start our trip at a southern most location this year as last year, St. Augustine was not really beach weather for us in early Feb. Not really in any hurry...just need to be home by 4/27. Older I get, the less I like the cold and Snow!

When I said to get off 95 at Jupiter I meant to say to then get on the TP and follow it to the end.
What CGs are you staying in?

I think the sunpass takes a couple days to activate. So don't plan to use it the same day you buy it. You can order one online and have the transponder sent to you.

I believe you can get a SunPass at some welcome stations. I imagine the one on I-95 at the state line would be one of those.
I'd also recommend staying off I-4 if at all possible. It can become a parking lot on a change of opinion, even in parts that appear to be out in the sticks.

Nope. Activation either online or on the phone is immediate. We put a new SunPass sticker on my wife's new car in the Publix parking lot, called to activate it, then immediately got on the Turnpike.

Wacissa and around Leon country there are a lot of beautiful sink holes. That was the highlight of my trip there. If you like freshwater swimming don’t miss it!

Travel any route you want... EXCEPT I4 thru Orlando !! The construction, lane shifts, and multiple roadbed surfaces will not be pleasant for you nor favorable to the integrity of your rv or its contents. I traveled it one way with my motorhome and tow... came back on the toll road and was happy to pay the toll.

I will be traveling NY to Fla and after the above comments need alt to 95 to 4 to Lakeland on 98. Looking at 95 to 10w to 301s to 75s to 471s to 98. Anyone know if this is a good choice? Other ideas are welcome, Thanks.
