Savannah, GA Campgrounds

Planning a trip to Charleston, NC and Savannah, GA area in May. I am looking for campground recommendations. Would love to be close to the ocean. Any thoughts on the State Parks as well.

Research not experience

We are going next summer and made reservations for Jekyll island campground south of Savannah. We chose this over Tybee and skidaway based upon proximity to the beach and dogs being allowed on the beach.

In Charleston we will stay at James island county park for proximity to both the beach and downtown Charleston as well as the amenities. I hope this is helpful. Good luck

Jeckel Island is very tight and when I asked only had a couple sites that could take a long rig.

Stayed at Skidaway State park near Savannah last July. Highly recommend this park. Spacious and private sites, most big enough to handle any size rig

We stayed at Red Gate Campground in Savannah last year. Very quiet, and close to Savannah. The trolley picked us up at the campground. We also stayed at James Island County Park in Charleston in December. Really enjoyed it. Would stay at either/ both again.

We stayed a week at Savannah South KOA. Very pretty location with a lake right on the property. Quick access to the city via Interstates.

Tybee is close to the beach but expensive. Skidaway is a state park but has no beach access ...at least we could never find one. All the beaches in that area are gated community controlled.

We stay at the CG on Tybee Island and only two blocks to the ocean. CG has been upgraded and now really nice. We also stayed at James island cg in Charleston. Also Oak plantation is another good cg in Charleston. Later RJD

We stayed at Skidaway Island SP in Savannah back in November. Excellent State Park. Last year we camped at Oaks Plantation RV Park in Charleston. Everything was great except for the traffic on hwy 17, especially left hand turns out of the park. This year we have booked a site at James Island County Campground.

Take a look at Creekfire in Savannah. Depending on the season, they have shuttles into City Market in Savannah. Have lake view sites. Have gravel and concrete pads, back-in and drive-thru. Have stayed there twice, and going back in May. Nice pools, and outside facilities

Mt Pleasant KOA is a nice lace for Charleston.

We want lunch in savannah after leaving Jekyll island and on our way to Charleston. Does anyone know a good place to park a TT and TV near downtown Savannah in order walk around downtown?

X2 Skidaway Island was spacious and the sites were big and not crowded. Short drive out to Tybee Island or into downtown Savannah. Really enjoyed the area.

Ya and a lot of black sand and to many trees. Not one of my favorite cg in the area. Later RJD

Real tight on parking. Maybe at the RR Museum. That is free. You can usually get picked up at a camp ground and taken into town.

We have stayed at Rivers End Campground on Tybee Island many times. Love the location. Easy to ride bikes to the beach or on the bike trails (mostly roads but in residential areas). The campground is very nice and only about 20 min from Savanah and all the fun things to do there. Can also visit Fort Pulaski.

We stayed a week there in 2017 with friends. We both have 40+ foot fifth wheels. We had no problem getting in, having room or getting out. I think we were in sites #28 and #29.

You may or may not be able to get a reservation at Hunting Island SP outside of Beaufort, but it would be a great place to stay and just do day trips to both Savannah and to Charleston. It is right on the ocean and around 1 1/2 hrs from both C & S.
