We spent Dec. 23rd. to Jan 1st. in Savannah. Lots to see and do. RR museum, river front, history of the area. A couple Forts to go see. Paddle Boat ride. Do a tour ride. Parking and driving around is tight. Free parking at the RR museum behind History museum. History Museum is where you get the tour rides, on/off all day. Hope this helps. Loved that area!

I'm not a big fan of Skidway state park to many trees and sandy parking pads. There is also an Air Force heritage museum out by Pooler, GA Later RJD

We stayed in a regular camp ground. They came to the CG to pick us up to tour the city. That was a selling point to me.

I am a huge fan of Skidaway Islands State Park campground! It is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I have been to. Huge oak trees covered in Spanish moss. Level sites. Yes, they are sandy but you are at the coast, everything is sandy. Ask about activities at the campground. They had an evening walk with a ranger through the marsh that was fun for me and the nieces. There are several trails into the marsh and an observation deck. They have a small natural history display with the skeleton of a sloth bear that is huge. The grandkids will love it.

I looked at Biltmore, but the price for 2 people only rubbed me the wrong way. I know that Only $2 per child is not much, but that is also not what I would call family friendly

Skidaway is excellent. The trees actually keep the area much cooler than the surroundings. This is one of our favorite spots. If you don't want this, look at campgroundreviews.com for recommendations.

Other things to do:
Tybee Island for swimming in the Atlantic.
Fort Pulaski for history.
Take one of the ghost tours! They are fun and give you a history lesson at the same time! One of the tours is actually in a hearse! This really is a must!
Take a tour of Savannah. You can either do a walking tour or take the trolley. Pick up a walking tour book at the visitor's center. This is also, where you pick up the trolley.
Better yet, just park at the visitor's center. They have suggestions on MANY things to do, while in Savannah. The trolley or walking will get you to just about all of it!
Plenty of great places to eat in Savannah and surrounding areas.

There is a lot to do in and around Savannah. Have a good time!

Yes, ask about the free trolley. There are for-pay trolleys that will tell you about the area as you ride, but there is a free one with two routes that cross so they cover most of the town.

I found Skidaway State Park by accident, it is one of our favorite campgrounds. It’s a little out of the way but so nice. We are going to Fort Wilderness in September and we hope to stop there on the way down

I'll put in a yes vote for Skidaway SP.

We just stopped over on our way south in March.

Could be tight for big rigs.

Enjoyed the marsh walk. We'll be back.

Google had us use exit 99 (going south on I-95). I'd suggest you use exit 94. Much less city traffic.

Enjoy.

We stayed for 2 weeks after Xmas. Great place. No-see-ums might be out so bring your spray. Try a 50\50 solution of Pine Sol and water in a spray bottle for around the campsite. Tybee Island is about 45 minutes away and go to Fort Pulaski but be sure to go when they have a tour. Great food at Driftwood Grill and Jalapeno's near park but head for the Crab Shack on way to Tybee for a killer dinner. Yeah, we like it there. May even try camp hosting to get more of it

We enjoyed Skidaway Island - nice camping.

Check out Savannah Dan walking tours while you are in town. He gives a very interesting tour of the city. Highly recommend it.

Loved Skidaway SP

We camped there for a week last month and loved it. We go to Savannah quite often but this was the first time we stayed at Skidaway SP. You will appreciated the trees and the shade offered from March through November as it gets pretty hot there! The Spanish moss is beautiful and is part of the charm of the low country though you should not handle it due to chiggers.

We camped in area 1 which had older bath facilities but they were clean. We went in one other bathhouse which had recent updates that were much nicer.

In addition to the sites already listed I would also recommend Laurel Hill Wildlife Refuge. It is a drive through area where you will see diverse species of birds and lots of alligators. It is a well packed dirt road. I would use a long lens and take pictures close to the car! This is located between Savannah and Hardeeville, SC and not to be confused with the Savannah Wildlife Refuge which you will pass heading to Laurel Hill.

You will be close to Tybee Island which has nice beaches but also large crowds. I would also recommend The Crab Shack on Tybee. Fort Pulaski is also a nice stop on the way to Tybee if you like 19th century history.

Have fun!

Another thing to consider, the National Museum of the 8th Air Force in Pooler, GA. Really worth the afternoon.

Skidaway Island State Park.

We made reservations for 3 nights. We will be coming down from Myrtle beach, so Not so sure we will be taking 95. Also not so sure we will be visiting Tybee beach, as we will be spending a week in Florida and then taking a Caribbean cruise, so we will have plenty of beach time, I thought Skidaway might be a good break from the beach. We have a 25' trailer, so getting in & out of the site and around the trees should not pose a problem. I will appreciate the shade these trees will have

I do appreciate all the comments so do keep them coming

Edit: looks like we will be taking 95 for at least the last part of the route from Myrtle Beach, But I am a New Yawka so traffic doesn't bother me

I went to Skidaway three years ago from Myrtle Beach. Wasn't in a hurry and took 17 south. Most direct route. Good roads all the way.

!7 does look like the most direct route. I may take that till it parallels 95 and then jump on that
