Through or Around Charlotte, NC?
What do you guys do...I77 right through Charlotte, NC or do you go around on I485? Do you take time of day into account for your decision making? Thanks!

I485 day or night. If I have a bypass opportunity, I'll take it. Greensboro, Raleigh, Charlotte and Atlanta to name a few.

We have tried to always go thru Charlotte on I-77 during the late nighttime. Always been lucky doing that and have not experienced any traffic jams. Made the mistake once coming back north thru there on a Saturday and they were doing road work, 3 hours to get thru Charlotte! Good camping!

I check google to see what traffic is doing then make the decision. Once 485 was shut down due to an accident, quicker going through on 77.
Another time heading south on 85, took 485 around just in time to get stopped due to an accident south of the exit. If we had gone straight through we probably would have been through before it happened.

Just came thru there on 12/22. It was a Saturday and thought everyone was on the road for Christmas already. Bad move. Lots of construction on I-77. If I could do it again, I’d bypass. JMHO.

Charlotte
After rush hours (6 to 10Am and 3 to 6PM) 77 and 485 are OK, but can be slow due to wrecks.
Avoid both in all directions AM and PM rush. I cannot emphasize that strongly enough.

If you're driving South I 77 the bypass is after all the bumper to bumper crap, just use your patience and just keep going, Sunday's are better.

take I-485
Living in Charlotte, we rarely use I-485 unless it's actually the shortest way to where we want to go, because it's a big circular loop, therefore almost always the longer way. That said, I'd suggest you use the segment on the west side of I-77, in either direction, because I suspect it's less traveled than the eastern arc, and you will miss some horrendous construction (not to mention traffic) near the center city.
Wish you could stop and enjoy Charlotte while passing through!

Yes, this is what we do for ANY largish city. If Google maps tells us to go around, we go around. It has worked great for us so far.

We go through Charlotte 15-20 times per year. If it is a weekend we always go down I77. Otherwise depends on the time. Before 6:30 am, between 10 and 3, or after 7 we do I77 on weekdays. Any other time it is 485 on the west side.

Even an under $200 Garmin GPS with traffic and lifetime maps makes these on the spot decisions. Your iPhone will show the traffic as well. I run GPS on my daily commute not because I don't know where I work but it will route me around snarled traffic caused by wrecks, snow, etc.
