If you need to get from I-85 northeast of Atlanta to I-75 south, consider taking US 441 south at Commerce. It's a good road, mostly 4 lane with some 3 lane. US 129 would take you from US 441 at Eatonton to I-75 in Macon. It's also a good road, but not 4 lane. GA 83 takes you from Madison to I-75 also but I'm not familiar with it.

Burning bridges

Apparently it was a storage for PVC materials. A transient started the fire. The intense heat made the concrete crumble and fall.
I believe they opened the south bound of I-85.
North bound is being routed to secondary roads.
Be safe and happy travels...
Now we just need a few snow flurries to add to the mix.!

The latest update On I-85 in Atlanta is that this section of the highway will remain closed North and South bound for the next 5 months. Apparently there are 3 sections on each side that will have to be replaced. They have 3 vagrants in custody. One is being charged with 1st degree arson. It's a mess and has affected the entire region. It's amazing how one section of a highway can cause so many problems. I live in south metro Atlanta and it has effectively cut off access to North Georgia unless I go completely around the city.

When I go south I usually go straight throw Atlanta on I 75, and of course I will be heading down there at the beginning of May heading to Disney World without the RV will this have much impact on I75 traffic?

Sort answer is yes. Right now I-75 is the only interstate going through Atlanta. What used to use I-85 is now using I-75 and I-285 (the perimeter). Atlanta's traffic is a disaster when everything is up and running. Close one and what you get is grid lock. My suggestion is if you can't avoid Atlanta completely is use some of the apps that are available to monitor traffic. There may be gaps where traffic may not be that bad. Probably in the wee hours of the morning. Good luck and happy travels.

Latest is the bridge work is to be completed by June 15. Contractor is a good one and there are incentives in place if completed by that time. Also once spring break is over traffic will really increase again. I285 is slow going now and will get worse after spring break. You can go straight though Atlanta on 75 north and south but better do early am or late pm. Later RJD

Why not just take the Loop around Atlanta like all trucks are required to do, no delays outside of the normal delays at rush hours

Where do you think the extra traffic is going to. I285 is slow now and as I said will be worse when spring break is over. Later RJD

Last Friday, May 31st, I drove through Atlanta straight down I-75S with zero issues in the early morning traffic. It was one of my best ever drives through Atlanta. With no south bound traffic merging off of I-85 at the I-75 / I-85 Connector it was a pleasant drive.

Monday afternoon I came back up I-75N straight through Atlanta. Once again it was a pleasant drive due to the reduced traffic volume on the Connector. I didn't hit any heavy traffic until I-285 on the north side of Atlanta.

For my quick trip to Florida having I-85 out of action actually improved the drive through Atlanta both ways...

Same here. Monday the 3rd we drove I75 north from Ft Meyers to north of Atlanta by far the easiest we have ever done.

Yep spring break makes a big difference for traffic in Atlanta. Not everybody can use 75 if they are going 85 so all that traffic goes to 285. As I watch the news and traffic every day it's not good and even those folks are predicting when break is over so are the good drives. I will find out when I head to FL and I have no choice but to take 285 to get to 85 south to Columbus GA. As I have to come down 400 I have to get off on 285. Depending on what time I leave it's possible to get on to 75 from 285 and will save me some time going through town. As mentioned timing is everything when it comes to traffic in Atlanta. Even if the bridges where not affected Atlanta can be a night mare during morning hrs and evening. Later RJD

Up date: Contractor is pushing to have the bridge done by May 25 providing weather cooperates. Hopefully it will be done by GA rally time. Traffic during rush hr has been really bad. Lot of accidents on the by pass does not help. If ya got to go through Atlanta do very very early am or late at night. Later RJD

I live in GA and HATE going through Atlanta! Look at Google maps on just about any day and you will see red just about everywhere. In addition to the I-85 closure, there is construction on the north interchange of I-75 and I-285 and various other areas around I-285.
My advice is to completely avoid Atlanta, at least until the I-85 repairs are completed. If you can't, be prepared for long waits, especially on weekends. The time you take driving around is probably less or at worst the same of sitting in traffic, getting your blood boiling!
The traffic here is about the same as the traffic around DC...Bad.

Rolled right through on I-75 the last 2 times. No problems . We always use the HOV lane when available.

This no problem as long as you are just using 75 however friend of mine went through yesterday and got caught up just after passing 285 north of town. Here again depends on traffic and your luck. As long as your not driving a RV HOV lane works.

BTW all construction in and around Atlanta suspended till 85 bridge complete. Later RJD

last Saturday we drove right thru the heart of ATL, about mid day, from North 75 thru town.... the EASIEST drive thru ATL ever!

some of it was due to being a Saturday
some due to traveling in the HOV lanes
but a lot due to folks 'scared' to drive thru ATL because of both normal traffic,
AND the news of the current N I85 bridge collapse...

Can a RV use the HOV lane?

Wondering if an RV qualifies for the HOV lane

HOV lanes state either 2 or more passengers, or motorcycles - it does NOT discriminate by TYPE of vehicle...

RVs and Motorhomes are just as welcomed as anyone...

I'm not sure on that one as I have never seen RVs using HOV lanes here. May let them for now to the extra traffic. Later RJD
