Upper Peninsula Michigan Route

Any suggestions on a good route from Plano Tx to the UP Michigan?
We are planing to leave Plano on Labor Day. I'm not sure whether to go through Arkansas or through Oklahoma. Then when we get further north should we try to go through Gary Indiana or should we go further east through Fort Wayne In and Lansing? We want to make our first long stop in Michigan at Mackinaw City then on to the other popular spots.
On our return we like to take another route so any recommendations about going through Wisconsin?

I am not sure about your routes, but the UP is great. What all do you have planned in the UP ? We try to go a couple times a year.

I think you'd enjoy the Lakeshore (Muskegon, Ludington, Manistee, etc) more than inland (Lansing).

But if you're just going for time, that'll slow you down.

Enjoy the Lake Michigan shoreline from Indiana Dunes near Gary to Mackinaw. St Joe, Holland, Grand Haven, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Lealanau Peninsula and Traverse City are all beautiful and fun.

If going to the UP, Whitefish Point, Pictured Rock National Seashore and Porcupine Mountains are all amazing. We even saw Northern Lights along Lake Superior shore.

Happy Campin!

If you take the route thru Ft Wayne there's a quaint shaded RV park right on the St Joseph river that runs through town. It's a city owned campground $22 a night. Easy in easy out on your way north. Stayed there last week and were headed to Mackinak on Saturday. Its Johnny Appleseed RV park.

Just be sure to take in one of those Wisconsin fish fries on Friday night. All the bars and restaurants do them and the fish is delicious.

Ditto on Traverse City - the downtown area is fun. Drop the 35' beforehand, of course.

If coming back down via WI, it'd be just about the right time of year to visit Door Cty. Very scenic, and make sure to get cherry pie!
