Wandering around Alabama

We're planning to spend much of May just wandering around Alabama...part of it will be along the Gulf Coast / Mobile area, but we have a couple of weeks to spend elsewhere in the state.

Can anybody give me a couple of "must see" places/things? Name and location would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Alabama is one of those states that there is really a lot to see, just hard to explain. We are lucky because we go from the Gulf to the beginning of the Smokey Mountains. Just depends on what you are interested in.....Of course we are rich in civil rights so if you enjoy that, see Selma to Montgomery to Birmingham. If you enjoy Space go to the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. If you like country music go to Fort Payne and that area...not much you can't see or do (well, no gambling) in the state of ALABAMA!

P.S. Eating...it's great down here!

We spent a few days at Joe Wheeler SP in northern Alabama. Great park with great seafood buffet at the lodge. I think the buffet is on Friday nights.

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll be in Huntsville around the 5th, 6th and 7th (M - W) and Joe Wheeler SP appears to be only about 45 miles west of Huntsville. We were planning on going to Decatur then drop straight south to Birmingham, but Joe Wheeler SP certainly might be an option. We're really not on any schedule...another of the benefits of being retired...

If you like motorcycles, check out one of the best museums anywhere. It's east of Birmingham.

Barber : Home

There's a good racing museum at the Talledega track.

There's a great museum in Anniston, with a variety of exhibits. It includes lots of animals, one of the largest bird collections in the world, and a large gun collection.

Welcome | Anniston Museum of Natural History

In Birmingham check out Oak Mountain. Its just south of the city. Alabama State Parks check this link too for nearby attractions. http://www.alapark.com/oakmountain/NearbyAttractions/

There's the Coon Dog Cemetery up in Muscle Shoals, which is just a little west of JW state park. Also, Newbern's on 72 in Florence has the best catfish dinner.

If you make it up to the Huntsville area, Wheeler wildlife refuge is a must see...great camping at Monte Sano State park, and if you are visiting the "Rocket City" The US Space and Rocket center is a must see as well!

Recently got back from a trip to Houston and stopped at two Corps of Engineers campgrounds in Alabama. Gunter Hill CoE on R.E. Woodruff Lake just west of Montgomery about 10 miles. There are two campground loops. Choose the new loop, Catoma Loop, only a couple years old. All sites are full hookup, level concrete pads well maintained. Because it is new and the fact that it has full hookups it is very popular, especially on weekends. I believe it is $24, I have an America the Beautiful senior pass and it was $12. The other CoE campground is called "Service". It is about 3 miles west of Coffeeville, AL on US Hwy 84. About 12 miles from the Mississippi line. It is not a large campground but is far enough off the beaten path to have easy availability. There are 10 or 12 pull thru's and a number of backins on the bank of the Tombigbee River. Camp hosts keep it very clean. Very nice spot to relax and watch barge traffic on the river. There are some hiking trails back into the forest. Take groceries with you as there is not much around there except a mini-mart in Coffeeville. Limited OTA TV. I will definitely be stopping there again.

An unusual place

Check this place out when you are staying at Joe Wheeler. About an hour away if you don't go through Florence and the traffic. Welcome to Rattlesnake Saloon
It's a few miles southwest of Tuscumbia. One of those off the beaten path places that you think wouldn't be way out here. We ate the burger(not bad, have had better) but that was not the reason for going. One of those places you have got to see at least once! PM me if you need more info.
