Where to stay: Albany East

We’re traveling from Michigan to Maine this summer, passing through Albany NY via I90.

Any good places to stay for a couple nights, East of Albany, either along I90 enroute to Boston, or in southern Vermont or New Hampshire?

This will be out first trip through this part of the country. Thanks!!

Schodack Island State Park, just the other side of Albany. Nice park, we've stayed there many times on our way south.

Safe travels!

Thanks! Will check it out.

I loaded the Campendium app this weekend; that looks like it'll be helpful too.

Here's two links to help find campgrounds. We really like the second one as it only has public campgrounds.

If you've got a couple of days to kill and also want a nicer scenic drive to Maine, I'd encourage you to head north of Albany towards Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls and Lake George which is a nice stop and fun town in the summer. We enjoyed our stay at King Phillips RV park there.
The best part about heading north is that you can then depart east all the way on the excellent and scenic route 4 through southern Vt. and New Hampshire all the way to Portsmouth NH then north on 95 to wherever your final Maine destination is. You can also get off #4 in Concortd and head over to Portland Me. directly on 202. I always like to get as far north on 95 as I'm going ...then work my way down the coast on Highway 1 stopping where we like...on the way "home" you can go all the way down 95 into Massachusetts and take the Mass Turnpike through the state and the Berkshires and you'll be able to see the stuff you missed by not going through Albany. It's gonna be fun no matter what you choose to do! Do you have firm reservations in Maine?? If not...suggest you get on the phone.

Heading up the mountain on Rt. 9 from Bennington, Vt., there is a nice little family owned campground called Greenwood Lodge and Campgrounds. It is a “hidden jewel”!! Give them a shout: https://campvermont.com/greenwood/
Mind you… you will be on top of one of the highest peaks in the Green Mountains in Southern Vermont. It is an abandoned ski resort turned into a very famous Internationally renounded Travel Hostel…. You will meet people from All Over The World!!!
Enjoy!

On our way to Maine now. Currently staying at "Camping on the BattenKill". Not far from Albany. Beautiful area, Nice campground. 3 more days here then wander up to the White Mountain area before going to Maine. If you are traveling the interstates then this might be further off than you want but it is a nice campground. Me Personally, I've had enough of NY interstates beating the hell out of me ant the trailer. So far, and its not very far, the VT roads seem better

Oh, just wait - they’re lulling you into false optimism…

Thanks, all, for the good suggestions. We reviewed this thread multiple times when working on our (ad hoc) itinerary.

Shodack Island State Park - Good choice, nice little park! Stayed one night on the way back, had a nice bike ride along the river in the morning before we left. Looked to me many other one-nighters there as well.

Battenkill was out of the way, skipped.

First night on the road we stayed at Red Bridge Recreation Area in western PA. Nice campground, beautiful area.

Night #2 we stayed at Greenwood Lodge in VT -- very nice!!! Had a great MTB ride on fire roads / ATV trails, including a quick trip into town & a climb back up the hill to the campground.

In Maine, we were at Searsport Shores Oceanfront Campground - very, very nice.

On the way back, we stayed at Shodack Island SP the first night, then two nights at Niagara Shores campground near Olcott NY (on Lake Ontario) - again, very nice.

The final leg back home went by quickly, as it was all interstate.

I'm expecting a 3-page electronic tolls bill in the mail soon...

Greenwood Lodge…! When we stayed there we hiked some of the old ski trails on Prospect Mountain. At that time it also featured a Hostel and we met people from all over the world. We thought it was an excellent place to stay and was nicely situated between Wilmington and Bennington. The Appalachian Trail crosses route 9 close by and there are a lot of hiking, horseback and ATV trails that cross cross the area. I would highly recommend getting an app like AllTrails so you can download a trail map and reduce any instances of wrong turns.
