2 5/16 ball in 2 inch coupler
Hi guys.
Searched internet to no avail because most of the people are asking the opposite question.
Can I use my 2 5/16 TT ball to tow a standard cargo trailer or flood light setup? Most of these have 2 inch couplers. Will it fit over the slightly larger ball?
I apologize if this seems stupid or has been answered before but I’ve only ever towed my travel trailer and the need has arisen to pick up a trailered floodlight for my kids school event.
Thank you

Unlikely. You could go to Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply and do a test fitting right there in the store. When you see that it doesn't work, you can buy this or this. The latter one covers all three cases, 1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16".

I agree. The larger ball probably won't fit in the 2" couplers "cup" properly and/or the coupler won't be able to lock down around the larger ball. Get the proper size ball and change it out for everybody's safety.

Always get the correct size ball for the hitch
AND every trailer is setup differently you may have to buy a mount and ball with the correct rise/fall........... to keep EACH trailer riding level
you can buy adjustable mounts .... $150
BUT I prefer a separate ball and mount for each trailer ... $20- $30 (each)

I agree with the proper size, you need to verify the actual light trailer, it could even be a pintle hook setup or 1 7/8.

As everyone else has said, "Get the correct size ball and shank"

I replaced my coupler on my boat trailer from 2" to a 2 5/16 coupler so I don't have to worry about size or change balls. All mt trailers are 2 5/16"now
They do make this ball setup.

Good on you for asking the question. This is how we learn. The only time I have ever used an incorrectly sized ball is when using my garden tractor to move my empty flatbed trailer around the property, less than 50 feet. When moving my 8500 lb camper or if the flatbed is loaded ball is always the correct size and coupler is locked on to the hitch ball.

No. Safe towing requires no compromises.
It won't fit.

You might consider something like this. It has both 2" and 2-5/16" balls as well as height adjustable.
HOPERAN Adjustable Trailer Hitch,6-inch Drop/Rise Trailer Hitch,Fits 2-inch Receiver,Ball Mount Hitch,2" & 2-5/16" Trailer Balls,Tow Hitch for Heavy Duty Truck with Double Pins and Trailer Hitch Lock. https://a.co/d/0fO48b6
I just recently bought this as I purchased a used 7x16 enclosed cargo trailer and it uses a 2" ball. But I still have need for 2-5/16 ball as well. This way, I only need the one hitch and it does double duty.
