If you don't plan to leave the insert in with the hitch pin, I recommend you add a note or marking on the hitch to remind you to remove the insert so it doesn't fall out while driving without the hitch.

It will rust in there soon enough, then it won't fall out......

Am I ok using the 2" adapter (insert sleeve) that came with my new truck?
If I were towing 10 or 12K lbs, I'd likely buy a new hitch in the 2.5" size, but that seems like overkill for this smaller TT I'm towing.
Opinions?
I have one question for you..............

Do you imagine that the auto maker would provide the adapter if it were unsafe or limited the use of the hitch in some manner without making a limitation as such in the Owner's Manual.

That would open them up to HUGE lawsuits and probably put them into permanent Bankruptcy, from which they would NEVER emerge, should it be found it was unsafe.

All the sarcasm aside, it will be FINE!

I used the sleeve in two different 2500 GM trucks for 8 years or so pulling up to 7000 pound trailers. Wrap the sleeve with a few rounds of Gorilla tape, cuts down rattle. Just replace the tape ever so often. Always replaced the locking pin in the receiver to keep sleeve secured and to know where locking pin was when I needed it next hookup.

Been using the 2" adapter on my 2018 Ram 2500 for the last 5000 miles of towing a 9500 lb TT that has a 1350 lb TW. Zero issues. I use one of those locking hitch pins and it stays in the hole 24/7 so my adapter's always where I need it.

Nope. Ford stopped doing that for 2.5 in 2019. It still gives a 3 to 2.5 reducer for those configs that have a 3” receiver, I believe. But nobody gets the 2.5 to 2 reducer anymore.

Shame on Ford. A lousy 10 bucks. SMH

I went with a B&W sleeve. Plus had to buy a longer pin.

Pulled my 10K trailer with the Chevy provided sleeve for 3 years and about 15K miles. No problems, rattles, or rusting in place. Always in, with a locking pin. Just bought a RAM, have the factory sleeve in, locking pin in, will be towing in a month or so with it, no worries.

Neither owners manual have any additional weight restrictions when using the adapter sleeve.

My 2016 GMC Denali Duramax came with a sleeve and I was using it with an Equalizer to tow my 8329SS but having issues. A couple folks on here suggested that some of my issues could be related to the slop in the adaptor sleeve. So when I decided to move to the Blue Ox SwayPro with 1,500 lb bars, I contacted Blue Ox and they sent me a 2 1/2" shank for free. I just had to send them back the 2"' shank. Great company and great hitch. The SwayPro with the 1,500 lb bars and the 2 1/2" shank made a huge difference in pulling the trailer. Much more stable and no sway. Now that I've moved to a 5th wheel though it's time to sell the hitch.

I have a 2019 Ram 2500 w/2-1/2" hitch. I bought an adapter from Mopar which works great! I would highly recommend to buy an adapter that has been 'notched' on both sides so your holes line up; otherwise, it is a pain trying to line up 2 sets of holes for the pin.

The factory one fits much better then the after market ones . at first i bought a curt adapter and lining up the holes was a pain and it was loose in the 2.5 receiver . took it back to wal mart not worth $2 let alone $13 . the factory GM reducer fits like a glove the holes line up perfectly when installed and no slop .

Ford 3" to 21/2" Adapter

Ford does not include it on the 19' Super Duty F-350. Not $10, but $45. Rip, I had mine 3" tack welded to a 2 1/2" adapter for all trailers. Trying to line up all 2 adapters and WDH is a PITA. Easy to pinch fingers. Also bought a 3" to 2" adapter and can open my tailgate, $75. I use this w/ utility trailers. W/ my TT, it causes it to tow worse. I have a nose heavy trailer and w/o switching head and bars to go to next heavier bars, better w/ the original set-up. This is only drawback I have found w/ Equalizer hitches. Going from 10K to 12K, you have to change head and bars. I believe it is the same w/ lighter.

You need to find a better dealership, if they're quoting you $45 for the 2.5 to 2.0 reducer. That's PN HC3Z-19H282-A. It's $20-$25.

The earlier post was talking about Ford. It's a rotten deal by Ford to omit this part because Ford is only saving about $10. If the part retails for ~$25, then, yeah, Ford's cost of that part is probably $10 or less. So, it passed along an inconvenience to the customers like me to save $10 on the build. Bad decision. Penny wise, pound foolish.

I agree that if you were removing and installing the sleeve all the time, it would be a big PITA. For me, I put my hitch in at the beginning of camping season and leave it there until we're done. The cheap-o Curt/Reese sleeve I got at Walmart for $10 works well. Yes, I have to take care to line up the holes. But, it's snug and stable.

My assumption is that the Ford sleeve fits better and auto-aligns the holes. I haven't ever tried one, though.

Adapter

It was the 2.5" to 3" adapter that was $45. I checked w/ another dealership later, same price. I agree w/ finding another dealership, but for different reasons. Sad that on a $70K truck the 2.5" to 3" adapter is not included. Also sorry that they dropped the Rancho stocks off the FX4 package w/o reducing the price. Going from Toyota to Ford, service has been disappointing so far. I have been waiting for a part for 6 months under warranty. No call backs, ETC.

A black sleeve in a black receiver becomes invisible. Unless you install it so it can't come out, paint the end white or orange, because one of these days, you'll remove the shank and forget the sleeve and it will drop out later on when you drive down the road.

Don't ask me how I know.

Sorry to hear about the service, but it might get even more frustrating for you ...

Fords that have the HD 3” receiver hitch still come with the 3” to 2.5” reducer. I may have mentioned that above, but can’t be bothered to check. Either way, those are still meant to be included.

It’s only the 2.5” to 2” reducer that is no longer included. If you have a 3” receiver, then the Ford uses a cascading system. It’s the same base PN as I listed above with the suffixes for light duty hitch 2.5 to 2 (A), HD hitch 3 to 2.5 (B), and HD hitch 2.5 to 2 (C).

This link explains it a bit more.

I’ve also seen one-piece 3” to 2” reducers in the aftermarket.
