The OP bought a used truck with 50K on it, If he has any warranty he is very lucky. I am sure Gassers don't have the Allison trans. That is why I buy only New vehicles

According to this thread, Gassers can have Allison tranny.

I have seen some advertised as well.

I purchased it with 51,000 miles from a chevy dealer in Cedar Falls IA who said they had done their inspections and found no issues. After I had it for about 1000 miles the transmission began to act up. I took it to a dealer where I live in St Louis and they could not isolate the problem and told me to drive it. I put just 7000 miles on it (5000 pulling my 7000 rock wood 2618VS.)
Today I took it in and found out the 3,4&5 gears were "burnt up".
It is under warranty but I feel the dealer I bought it from sold me a truck with problems. I originally called them when I had the first sign of trouble and they told me to bring it back to them 450 miles away. Then they would no longer return my calls.
I guess the morale of the story is to buy a TV close to home If at all possible.
Unfortunately I couldn't find my truck anywhere locally.
I'm very happy with the local dealer doing the work and appreciate their attention to rebuild the transmission.
Anyone else have transmission problems with their chevy 2500's?
Most likely your rig has the 6L80 or 6L90 transmission. I don't think the gears are burnt-up, rather the clutches. These transmissions differ from other transmissions as they shift clutch-to-clutch rather than using one way clutches like other transmissions. On paper they were a neat concept, but a piss-poor design. Stop by any transmission shop and they'll tell you all about them. A good rebuilder can fix the woes in this transmission.

Check owners manual and it give you the specs for GM and Allison trans with the 6.0 gas. Also when towing alot the manual states to do a fluid and filter change between 50 and 75 K miles. I will get mine changed when I return from Texas in the spring.

I'm 99.9999999% sure the Allison transmission did not make it behind a 6.0L gas. I do know they made it behind the 8.1L gas.

My son is a certified World Class GM Master Technician. I asked him if GM ever put an Allison tranny behind 6.0L engine. His answer: "Nope
Never
4L80E or 6L80/90E"

Stranger things have happened. Next time you're under there, snap and pic and post it up.

What I cannot believe is the low mileage on most posters trucks here. My F350 will be 1 year old next month and has 44,000 now.

Correct. Last time you could get the Allison was when they still offered the 8.1gasser and I had one. Pull anything you wanted to but could not pass gas station. Later RJD

Sounds like GM made good on the warranty, can't complain about that.

Unless they dumped the pan and filter and looked for material that shouldn't be there, there is no way to tell if a transmission is wearing abnormally. All they can do is a test ride and determine if the transmission is shifting properly.

Sometimes, mechanical things break prematurely...most times they don't!

Daughters chevy cruze had the trans go out 1 mo before the PT warranty expired. GM rebuilt the trans without hassle. Only downside was no additional warranty for the new trans. It expired a week after getting the car back when the original warranty expired. Regardless, still got a brand new trans. Bill to GM was $3700. Cost to her was only the incovienence.

WoW. 44K in 11 months with 16K pulling the 5er. At 955 I hooked the 5rt and returned with almost as much as you put on in 18 months. Figure you must have one of those job things that limits your travels...

In 2013 I bought a rust-free 2 year-old Ram 2500 CC w/balance of 5 year/100K mile powertrain warranty for $14,000 from a reputable local mechanic/used car dealer who services a lot of our extended family's vehicles. It had more wear & tear than other 2 year-old trucks, so I knew I was taking a risk... However, everything else in that price-range was much older, showing rust, and out-of-warranty... So IMO other $14K options were riskier...

A year later the 5.7 Hemi blew driving home from work/not towing... With 96K miles Ram still replaced it under warranty @ different authorized Ram dealer, no questions asked, and it was trouble-free for the next 3 years.

Last week the differential went driving home from work... I'm a little bummed... However, I took it to the same mechanic/used truck guy & hope he will treat me right... Still waiting on estimate but will probably be at least $1500 for him to install all new gears, seals, outer wheel bearings, etc... I need it to last a while longer...

HOWEVER, for $14K invested it's been my daily driver for 4 years/50K miles of which about 8K have been towing & the new engine only has 40K miles, so it's just broken-in. Original payment was only $220/month & now it's paid-off... A friend is making $750 payments on a new diesel... I figure my $1500 differential replacement is only 2 of his payments & then I'm payment free for a long while... IMO buying 2-3 years old offers best bang/buck even w/risks...

I appreciate all the replies. The transmission is not an Allison and gym is rebuilding at no cost. The 2015 has 100000 warranty on power train and transmission, so I feel blessed for that. Good to know it may just be an anomaly as there does not seem to be a lot of transmission problems with these trucks, at least not according to this thread.
Thanks again for all replies
