2016 Honda Pilot Tow Vehicle
Hello, just finished our second short 500 mile round trip pulling our 2016 201bhxl at an approximate weight loaded of 4755 lbs and 550 pounds of T.W. reduced to 380 pounds with Pro Series Hitch. I see many post questions about what can I pull? I am a CDL truck driver by trade for the record. This set up I have performs excellent. I can travel in overdrive on flat roads no problem, holds the gear consistently with out shifting in and out of OD. D4 over White Pass here in Washington State 55 mph with out pushing Honda past 3300 rpm. Prodigy brake control set at B2 can't even tell trailer is behind me coming down the mountain. Honda max tow rating for 2016 is 5000 lbs with there optional Trans cooler and hitch set up. I can honestly say my Pilot is very capable. I did take the time to set it up with good equipment to tow. The bad I get 10.8 miles to the gallon towing. I will update the gas figure when I get on a road I can travel in OD for more than 50 miles. Next week Sol Duc Rv and LA Push. Happy traveling

It is nice to see you post this. We are looking for our first travel trailer that we will be towing with our '16 Chevy Traverse AWD with tow package. It is rated for 5200 pounds towing, which obviously we will be below once we factor in people, stuff, etc. We are kind of shooting for 4000 pounds, give or take, for a rated trailer weight.
Good luck on your travels!

Do you have the 9 speed or the 6 speed trans? Your real world info would be great for my customers.
We had a '11 pulling high wall popup- 3800 loaded. Could do it with patience and knowledge. Most difficult part was our summer spot was at 8500ft! So I would spend about 8 miles doing 35 mph @ 4500 rpm- max torque. And it could do it.

Pulled my Roo 19 (~4100 lbs loaded) for one season with a Traverse. I was NOT a happy camper. Bought a Silverado.
Good luck to you.

I am confident you will have no problem
So quick update we have now towed our r.v. about 5000 trouble free miles. I can say not once have I even thought I need more pulling or stopping power. When I did my research I read so many people saying our mid sized suv are not good for towing. I actually wish I bought the 4700 pound dry weight trailer I really wanted. My same trailer just with a slide. I don't know much about your rig but my dad pulls a 2500 pound pontoon boat with a 2015 GMC Terrain 4 cylinder. 500 lbs over max tow rating no problem at all. Lake Havasu AZ and back spring break pushing 70 the whole way. My vote go for it. Don't go over on max trailer weight my insurance guy said depending on fault that will be issue in accident. But to his knowledge they have never weighed actual weight just what label in door says.

2016 Honda Pilot
For the gentleman who asked my honda has the 6 speed transmission. The entire factory honda tow set up to include honda transmission cooler. As stated in my original post I am a CDL truck driver with a couple million miles behind me. I would NEVER tow anything I feel is not 100% safe. This honda has literally blown me away dead stop to 60 with a little less than 5 grand behind it, wife adult son and daughter in rig no problem at all. Stopping no problem. I would have zero reservation recommending the 2016 Pilot for a tow vehicle for a thing up to 5000 pounds

You do realize that the TT tires aren't speed rated for 70mph. 65mph is the max. Heat, speed and overloading are what causes ST tires to blow apart, tearing up your TT.
Slow Down.

There is a huge difference between hauling a Pop up and hard sided travel trailer. That hardsided trailer acts like a huge parachute that you have to drag down the highway.

What is the payload of your 2016? You have to be close to maxed out, my wifes old 05' towed good also but if I recall we could only tow around 3500 per Honda spec, and the payload was around 1300 which put us right at max!!!!!
Happy camping, I sat in a 2016 a couple weeks and it's really nice on the inside, I don't like the looks of the outside tho!!!!

Know your limits
I see my original post has gained some attention. Yes my Pilot max tow rating is 5000 pounds. My tires are rated for 75mph so thanks for the advice to slow down. Never do I put my family or yours at ANY safety risk. I keep all of my equipment serviced and safe or safer than factory. Also yes I am technically over GCVW but as stated 23 years CDL trucking and I am very confident in what is safe and acceptable and what MAY work. Again I know you diesel guys are saying I am nuts, I am ok with that. If I thought for one second my 2016 Pilot was not up to the task I would be at the Ford dealer now. Honestly I planned to buy a new truck if I was not confident the Pilot could safely do the job. After my first outing to beach mostly flat was totally impressed. Second trip over White Pass 4000 ft elevation blown away, easily passed 25 mph tractor trailers without wringing my Hondas neck at all. Colorado? ??? 12000 feet hills not sure but I will let you know. And yes I am going 60 mph at b 3100 rpm in d4 no problems. Only dislike 10.8 mpg consistently in the flats and in the moutains. And no I don't work for Honda

As a professional driver, I am confident that you know the difference between you controlling the trailer and the trailer controlling you. I am happy that you found a vehicle that suites your needs as a pickup truck doesn't fit the bill for all customers. I am curious about cargo capacity for the pilot and I will look it up tomorrow.
And yes, I work for Honda.
If your biggest worry is gas mileage, then find your sweet spot with speed and deal with it. Mine is about 60-62. Remember, you are pulling a HOUSE behind you. Worst I got was 6 climbing a 12% grade and best was 13 on flat with my pilot. Only things I recommend is to max inflate your rear tires and change oil every 3000. Oh and change rear diff fluid at 7500 and every 15k after that.
